andym911 Posted July 17, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I take this week for a short trip to Israel. Will pack a 28 and 35mm lens (Elmarit and Elmar) and hope it works out. Couple of years ago I took the same como and it hung up on me after a day or so.. Even with its quirks I still haven't seen more pleasing files than those from the M8.2 (Compared to M9...Canon etc.) I never take a backup camera with me as I am only an amateur (don't take a backup phone or laptop either for that matter.) So what is the point of the post....nothing significant...just keep your fingers crossed that it does not let me down...i really love the M8, don't trust it but love it;) hope to post some stuff next week assuming I get a couple of good ones. best andy
Advertisement Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Hi andym911, Take a look here The M8 will be the one camera. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
johnloumiles Posted July 17, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 17, 2011 Best of luck on your trip, I'm sure the M8 will not let you down. I too have a 28 Elmarit and it should be the perfect lens to accompany you to Israel. I hope to go there someday soon. I'm curious though, you said you prefer the M8 over M9 files. Any specific reason?
Zsolt Arkossy Posted July 17, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 17, 2011 Good luck! The Elmarit is a fine lens! Just for curiosity, don't you find the 35mm too close to 28mm? All the best, happy shooting!
!Nomad64 Posted July 17, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 17, 2011 Best wishes for your trip, Andy. 28+35 is a good choice, its roughly 35+50 in M8 terms. I always took only the M8 in my travelling and she never failed me. I have very a strong belief that whilst mechanics usually work always but need some overhauling from time to time, electronics once infant mortality period is over work always well over a reasonable span of time. So fear not, good light and happy shooting. And don't forget to post here once you're back! Cheers, Bruno P.S. May I respectfully suggest to take with you at least a backup battery and - possibly - a backup charger?
Doc Henry Posted July 17, 2011 Share #5 Posted July 17, 2011 On my last trip to Vietnam and Laos, I had brought an M9 with M8 as a back up. I brought also a 35mm and a 50mm Summilux asph I added a 90mm macro-elmar for its small size and to take portraits or flowers + a tripod As Bruno said, I also took my 6 Leica batteries, a charger and several Sandisk (4,8 and 16 GB) cards in reserve (I take in DNG + JPEG) For you the 28mm equivalent to 35mm (for landscapes, for example) and the 50mm equivalent to 75mm (for portraits): it's a good combination Have a nice trip Andy Best Henry

Hope to post some stuff in a few days Best Andy Should be fun with some pictures from Israel here. I am sure the M will delivere even without a back- up M9 will give a 20 mm a fare full frame feeling - been there moving up to full frame with a DSLR. When we take that route - I am sure none of us will be thinking badly about it. Until we do - I just had my M8 at the shore at lake Vänern, Sweden today giving extreamly promising DNGs to explore when back at the computer. Also I had absolutely no back-up...... andym911 Posted July 22, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted July 22, 2011 Well Time for a big piece of humble pie---- M8 failed totally with the red flashing light syndrome and the camera not waking up. I have had this before but it sorted itself out with new battery and charger. This week it was unusable :-(( Bitterly disappointed and camera will go to solms to get it fixed. Just don't want to believe that I must always take 2 cameras on a short trip. Ended up using my iPhone for a few casual shots and that was it. Flying back shortly with a " should have known better" feeling. Best Andy

A few months back, a camera that had served me well for over 5 years decided to stop working intermittently before quitting altogether. To rub salt in the wound, the camera turned out to be too old to repair when I finally brought it to the service center. Fortunately it was a trip to someplace local, just a few hours drive from home. Such is the nature of machines and technology I guess. Even our most-loved and trusted gear will fail sometime. wda Posted July 23, 2011 Share #12 Posted July 23, 2011 Andy, did none of the classic first-aid tricks not bring your camera back to life? Are you sure that your cards battery are genuine and not fakes? Obvious questions, I know, but worth checking. Do let us know the reason for failure in due course. Sorry to hear about your experience.
Jeff S Posted July 23, 2011 Share #13 Posted July 23, 2011 I haven't heard about many issues with the M8.2. I own two...one for 3 years, another for a year...and no problems with either. For early M8 owners, well that was another story. I carry both cameras on most every shoot (28 on one, 50 on the other); one of the benefits of having such small cameras and lenses. Shooting without lens changes is fast and less prone to dust, and if something does go wrong, back-up is immediate. I didn't worry much about back-ups in my film days; now wouldn't go on a trip with any digital camera without one. Jeff
djsteb Posted July 23, 2011 Share #14 Posted July 23, 2011 I've had my 8.2 for over two years now and can honestly say have not had any problems at all , guess it's the luck of the draw or of course people who don't have problems don't usually post. Hope I haven't jinxed myself ! David

andym911 Posted July 24, 2011 Author Share #16 Posted July 24, 2011 hi to all.... am back home now and have tried again with another battery to get life back into the camera but just the flashing light but not sign of normallife. I only use Leica batteries and charger, the last time it happened i went and ordered 2 new batteries and a new charger.. am sure after a trip to solms it will be fixed...its a pain in the ass but i guess i just got unlucky.just bothers me big time that my cheapo canon 350d that i have had for 6 years never fails, never. i still love the M8 but wish i could trust it....next time maybe. thanks for all your replies. best andy

Jeff S Posted July 24, 2011 Share #19 Posted July 24, 2011 Your cards may be fine, but be aware of many fakes out there. There are many other articles on the subject. Best to buy from a good dealer. Jeff
