Neck strap or wrist strap

I was wondering whether other X1 users find it more convenient to use a neck strap or a wrist strap for walking around. And if a wrist strap, where they stow the camera when not in use. I'm assuming that with a neck strap, the X1 stays around the neck between shots. I'll be going off on a short vacation soon, leaving the Nikon DSLR and lenses at home to lighten the load, but I don't want the X1 to be a load either. Thanks for the help.

I use a Black Rapid SnapR 35 for two reasons. The camera is always to hand even whilst it's in the bag. The camera is on a sling (as is the bag) and sits nicely on my right hip.

It's not possible to keep the viewfinder on though and use the bag as defined. You can have the viewfinder on and not the use the bag but maintain the use of the strap.

Reading the drivel I've just written, it's easier to view the Black Rapid site than to read the above.

Long answer: I have the Leica X1 leather case, which is so darn handsome I'd be tempted to wear it as a fashion accessory even if I didn't intend to take any photos. With that case, the neck strap does not fit so well but the wrist strap fits perfectly out the side. And in any event, when out and about I like to have the camera in my hand at all times - the X1 is the perfect size for that - not hanging around my neck, in which case the wrist strap is just what I need to give me the security that I won't drop my Precious in the dirt.

Short answer: Wrist strap.

Hello likealeica,

Welcome to the Forum.

I use a standard 14092 w/ no shoulder pad set @ a length such that when it is on my left shoulder & I pull the camera against my head to compose this movement tightens the strap stopping it where it gives me a more steady camera/lens held more rigidly.

This same strap set the way I said wrapped twice around my left wrist (I am right handed) gives me a very secure, very comfortable wrist strap that is not too tight w/ a safety factore if the camera is inadvertantly dropped or pulled away. It is not cumbersome & does not bother me when I am doing something else.

Best Regards,

Michael

I'm using the hand grip and a 28mm viwfinder (close enough), which makes the setup a little to big for a belt pouch or a jacket pocket. So, guess the choices are neck strap or a wrist strap plus a camera bag hanging off my shoulder like one of the small Domke's.

When using just the X1 (with viewfinder and hand-grip) alone, I use a belted Lowepro Apex 100AW which comfortably takes the camera and wrist-strap. Mostly, though, the same camera sits in a compartment of my A & A ACAM3000. sharing space with my M8/M9 and spare lenses. That is a compact travel kit with both cameras readily available at any time.

Similar setup as David I have the Leica wrist strap thumbsup and most of the time it is in my hand however when I don't feel like hand carrying it (or when out for a bite to eat) I put it in a lowe pro bag that has a neck strap and can clip to my beltAmazon.com: Lowepro Rezo 60 Camera Case (Black): Camera & Photo it has zipper pocket for sd cards and an extra battery, works for me.

Black leather half case, Voightlander view finder, Leather neck strap. And I wear it all like the beautiful work of art that it is. I only move it around to one side or take it off to eat (don't want to spill food on my camera). It's always ready to shoot, I can quickly cover it with a jacket or shirt ( I live in Seattle) and both hands are free, when I'm not shooting.

I use the long strap because that's what I am used to but it also steadies the camera when using the LCD,..... pull the strap tight against your neck and it will give you extra stability....like a mini tripod :) wish it was adjustable though, because its a bit long for me...

I can't stand to have anything around my neck, including those "cross body" designs like the 18709 fashion bag. But I bought it anyway and cut the stitching from the strap and re-fastened it to work like a shoulder strap. I also have a wrist strap on the camera which I've found to be essential for actual use, to make sure I don't drop the camera. Now I look fashionable (not like a photographer), my hands are free with the camera bagged, and the small black wrist strap from a Canon pocket camera that hangs from the side of the bag is scarcely noticeable.

But there are downsides. When the camera is removed from the 18709 bag, sometimes it pops off the lens cap, so you have to learn to anticipate that every time. Getting the camera in and out is a minor chore, and not as convenient as the big-bag or half-case solutions. And there is no provision in that bag for the spare battery (you do need the spare battery), but I squeezed it in anyway, and after a year now, the case doesn't bulge more than about 1/10 inch.

I didn't like the X1 neckstrap as the leather doesn't feel smooth at all. Luckely I had a second M à la carte neckstrap for the X1. I also have the Leica grip attached and both are packed in the Artisan & Artist half case. One drawback: it is a bit bulky now but carries great 

I use the X1 neckstrap now on a D-Lux 4 

I hate neck straps, as the camera always flops around. I bought the wrist strap and it is truly wonderful. I use a small Tamrac case that fits on my belt. I wish i had the model# for you, but don't. It has a small zippered pouch in front that's perfect for extra battery and a chip or two. The X1 fits in the case perfectly, just a bit snug. Having the wrist strap attached (& folded over into the case which I would not be able to do with the much larger neck strap), makes it very secure to pull out of the case with no chance of dropping the camera. Also, when using the camera on a tripod, which I do all the time, the wrist strap is no bother, but a long dangling neck strap could be a problem.
