D2-Fan Posted July 14, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Last night I was able to remove some minor scuffs near the camera strap lugs the previous owner made. I used the following to carefully remove them: Lens cleaning cloth, dampened, and baking soda for a fine granulate polisher. With some very careful polishing strokes and patience I was able to completely remove the previous marks without introducing any scratches to the exterior paint. I was inspired after watching one of the videos showing Leica technicians polishing surfaces of cameras and Thorsten Overgaard's recollection about how his D2's came back in near new condition after having them serviced at Leica AG. Baking soda does not scratch surfaces (I brush with it too), and makes a nice compound for polishing, however, if you choose to do this, remember that you do so at your own risk. Here's how the area on both sides looks now:

andybarton Posted July 14, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 14, 2011 Interesting What did the body look like "before"?
marknorton Posted July 14, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 14, 2011 That's a good result. The leather protectors and user manual addendum were all we needed to know that this was a late fix. I'm going to be selling my D2 soon so will try what you suggest. It would have been good to see some before pictures!
D2-Fan Posted July 14, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted July 14, 2011 Funny, the whole time I'm thinking a before and after shot would have been a lot more helpful. It does work though! Just would have been nice for you all to see visual evidence of the before part. Sigh. C
jrethorst Posted July 17, 2011 Share #5 Posted July 17, 2011 I bought a bottle of "Mr. Metal" cleaner/polisher for something else, then decided to try it on my D2, which had light lug strap scratches -- the previous owner had not used the leather protectors. Worked like a charm. Made by Northern Labs Inc. I'm not affiliated.
