There are two sockets on an M3, one for FP bulbs and one for electronic flash.

They both have a non-standard, Leica-only fitting.

If you get an M3 to PC adapter and plug it into the X socket, you can used the SF24D on the M3 with a PC-to-hotshoe adapter. There's a flash-synch arrow at 1/50 sec IIRC; that speed and any slower speed will work with the flash.

You can use it in Auto mode or in Manual mode; the TTL/GNC mode won't be available since the M3 doesn't have the circuitry necessary to drive it in that mode.

There are doubtless many other simple non-dedicated automatic/manual flashes on the market that would work as well on the M3.

I got one of those things for my M2 (improved version of the M3 :D) and the main disadvantage is that it pokes out my eye when trying to focus, which is a minor obstacle. Flash and Leica M is an unhappy marriage.
