I've two Luigi cases one on my M2 and one that fits my 1 or 3f, they are beautifully made, too nice to use in fact, I've also got an early brown M2/3 case which I split and fitted a stud fastener to so I can use it as a half case and as it's a bit scuffed I tend to use it when out on the hills rather than the Luigi ones. I've also got a black M4 case the two halves of which can also be separated but I think it is a very ugly case.

Posters here are crazy about the Luigi cases.

I use the leather case that Leica sells.

...i have had good results with most leica-branded cases...the original brown calf-leather zip case and half-case for the cm are of such high quality that i have often wondered whether they were produced by hermes...

...on a related question, i have had a hard time trying to source leather straps (wide strap and an a la carte strap) for an mp and was wondering whether anyone knows where they may be acquired?

Luigi's cases are very fine examples of craftwork, stylish as well as practical. I was sceptical if the menue cover would work properly when i ordered it, but it is perfect and no nuisance in practice when you fix and unfix it.

At the same time i thought the built-in tripod screw a good idea for you don't have to put the camera out of the case using a tripod. Unfortunately this doesn't work. When you want to screw out the tripod you unscrew the camera from the case, so you have to pull out the camera and work with a gripper to seperate the tripod from the case.

Well, may be an issue for a Luigi's update scheme...

Hi "UliWer". I am sorry that you had problems with my special SS "flush" Tripod screw of your case. BUT, it was enough to ask me how to better use it, avoiding to experience again the described problem ! In fact, I would have answered to (please):

1- Fit the camera in the case, closing the special SS screw with a certain strenght. Not exceeding, but well thight.

2- Fit now the possible Tripod (head) screw in the case SS screw, taking care to thight well it, too, BUT LESS STRONGLY that the SS screw of the case !

That way, be sure that when you'll want to remove the tripod, you will successfully remove (unscrew) the tripod head screw, NOT the SS case screw...

The same must be done with ANY other case screw, with the lone difference that MY screw, being a "flush" one, is not visible on his sides...

Hoping to have been of some help, thank you again, and ciao to all ! Luigi

I paid 100 euros for the Leica camera protector for M8. Quite happy with this, it has been very useful in several circumstances, since I carry it every time I am out of home, or at luch time during working days for bus/metro trips in central Paris.

There are leather cases and then there are the Luigi cases. I now own three Luigi cases ( a full case model and a half cut for my MPs, and I just received two days ago a half cut case for the M8 with built-in handgrip), all with Luigi's leather straps. The quality of the leather, the attention to detail, the craftsmanship and Luigi's customer service are just a luxury that one does not find very often anymore. The feeling and softness of the strap around your neck or your hand is addictive and one more reason to take the camera with you wherever you go. The full case model is perfect, as it allows you to remove the top in case you do not need the full protection, and becomes a half cut case. Think of it as a convertible car with the top down. The built-in hand grip is very comfortable and provides you with a very firm grip. The fit is perfect on both my MP and M8 models. The colors are simply beautiful; careful though, they're addictive. Once you get one, you'll want another one as well. Last but not least, Luigi's responsiveness is second to none - the perfect service from a passionate man. I think of his website as a homemade art gallery where Luigi introduces the visitor to his work, but also to his beautiful family. After browsing the site, you send him an e-mail with your needs and he will reply promptly with payment instructions, or you can visit his eBay store.

Got the M8 "camera protector" half-case and the new wide leather strap. They are nice.

Of course they run about $209 for the set against $360 for the handmade Luigi set.

Pay yer money and take yer choice!

It ruins the vinyle covering and rubs marks unduly on the body.

I have all 3 cases for M7 and M8 : Luigi's, Kameralader's, Leica's.

Luigi's are the fanciest, with all those colors and rich leather, plus a rugged artisan's feel.

And the man is fun to deal with.

Kameraleder's have the finest leather and craftmanship. I discussed with George Elanjian :

his case designer is an artist who works for Hollywood, making gloves for actor's costumes,

and it shows. The seams, the cut, everything is high precision.

I bought from him a full case which is very tight around the camera, and very small indeed,

adding no bulk to the body.

The only glitch is George is not as well organized as Luigi, having a day work.

But it's worth it — and I should add the weak dollar adds to its appeal : half-case new for

180 $ (120 €), full-case 320 $ (210 €), it goes (almost) cheap.

It's just a matter of tast if you like camera cases or not, I like them but don't use them often. Most of the time I have a rapidwinder

and a rapidgrip mounted on the camera. The half case gives some protection but not to the top plate.

I have so far bought four Luigi cases, for an M3, Digilux2, and 2 SL2's. I also have two à la carte cases recently purchased for my à la carte MP and M6J, which by comparison are little short of low-end junk-the top half's leather splitting at the fold after less than 6 months' light use!

If Leica wish to continue selling cases, they should return to the higher quality which was present in the 1980's and 90's, or else enter into an agreement with someone like Luigi to make these for them. Their current offerings, I cannot say strongly enough, are just not up to scratch.

Luigi will also offer the required flexibility to ensure that his customers end up getting exactly what they want, and so far, his cases, some almost 3 years old, show no wear, and retain a nicer and more tactile feel and smell. The only point where the Leica design (NOT execution, however) is superior, is in the thumbgrip of the M cases (or at least the à la carte ones).

Another vote for Luigi's cases.

I have 2 for my M8's, one with the removable panel in black and the other a gorgeous weathered brown with the LCD flap. As mentioned by others, one of the advantages of the beautifully crafted cases is that people often remark on your 'old fashioned' camera which suits me just fine.

I also have a black case with the grip 'bump' for my M7 and this also is a beautifully fitted case.

Luigi's straps are also really nice to use and they protect against any damage at the lugs on the camera. However, the combo of strap & case does take some effort to remove/refit the camera when changing film or memory cards. It's much easier using my other UpStrap straps which have only a ring at the end and so less 'stuff' to manage when unclipping or re-clipping the leather case.

I also bought and quickly discarded the Leica leather half case for the M8. By comparison it is crude, has hard/sharp leather around the front clips and it's more glossy finish isn't as nice or as secure as Luigi's. I didn't use mine enough to run into the wear issues that some people have reported.

In the US I found it easiest to source Luigi's cases and straps from PhotoVillage in NYC (nice folks - great service). Much simpler than trying to navigate Luigi's web site and email exchange. The downside is that their stock is more limited than obviously Luigi's ability to produce pretty much anything you need. The good thing is that the quality of his leatherwork bears no relation to the quality of the web site.

I always feel like these "cases" miss the point. When I'm using a Leica I'm focused on where the camera is and what it's doing.

The time my Leicas are prone to injury is when they are slopping around in my work bag, on the floor of the car, in the cockpit of an aircraft or in some similarly unfriendly environment.

Because of this I made some "camera envelopes". These look just like an envelope, they're made of two layers of "macrosuede" upholstery fabric. Both the interior and the exterior surface have the face of the fabric showing. The closure is velcro. They provide enough padding to protect the camera from minor bumps (but they are not bulky); they protect against scrapes and scratches and they keep the dust out. The camera strap runs out either end of the envelope opening providing something to hang onto.

I can fit any M into the envelope together with an attached lens from 21mm to 90 mm. The finder for the 21 sits inside the envelope, in its case, not attached to the camera.

It takes seconds to access the camera and when I do access it it is not encumbered by some clunky leather case. When I have two cameras around my neck they do not touch because I keep the straps at different lengths.

The other benefit of the envelope is that it provides a nice soft polish to my BP MP when it it travels in the envelope.

It took about 25 minutes to make each envelope with a heavy duty sewing machine, once designed.

Regards

Mike

I agree - and would add that the design of the M8 with its (silly) removable bottom plate makes it difficult to use any kind of half case. I bought the Leica neoprene case which I store my camera in at home and when travelling. I then remove the camera from the case and leave it in my crumpler bag as 'padding' on which to rest my camera, so I can quickly take out the camera and take photographs..

I would add, though, that I do have a Luigi strap, which imho is the only decent strap to use with a M camera. Tough, well made, carefully designed to protect the lugs and body. Well worth the money.

Which do you prefer...the removeable or the flap? I am on the verge of ordering one of Luigi's half cases for my M8 but am having problems deciding on which I'd prefer. It would seem that the hanging style could possibly get in the way to a degree.

Actually I find that the flap is more convenient in general use for me. You get used to unhooking the flap as needed and then quickly popping it back up. I don't chimp a lot so this works for me.

The removable flap would seem to be the best approach but I find it gets in the way unless you remove the flap most of the time, especially if you chimp very often. I haven't lost mine yet but it seems only a matter of time.
