Advertisement Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Hi Lord Fluff, Take a look here 35 cron asph -> 35 new lux asph worthy upgrade?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thighslapper Posted July 16, 2011 Share #22 Posted July 16, 2011 There are similar arguments with most of the other focal length Leica offerings...... I have a 90/4 macro and a 90/2 ....... the second because it is 'faster' and can 'isolate' the subject better etc etc etc. I take and use the 90/4 all the time. I can live with the loss of speed. Ergonomics, weight and usability win out every time........ The differences with the 35/2 and 35/1.4 are not that dramatic from these points of view but are still present. I find the 35/2 pretty well perfect and can't see the extra stop being worth the price premium.
peter_n Posted July 17, 2011 Share #23 Posted July 17, 2011 I find the 35/2 pretty well perfect and can't see the extra stop being worth the price premium. It's not. I had a wonderful 35/1.4 ASPH that was sold to me by a wedding photog who really treasured it. It was a terrific lens and I used it at f1.4 quite a bit too. Then a couple years ago I bought a 35/2 ASPH just to try it out and just loved the way it rendered; not harsh at all. I also preferred it from an ergonomics/usability perspective, for some reason I found the Summilux slightly awkward to use. Long story short I felt guilty about it but ultimately sold the Summilux, don't miss it and still love the Summicron which I'll never sell.
luigi bertolotti Posted July 17, 2011 Share #24 Posted July 17, 2011 I find the 35/2 pretty well perfect and can't see the extra stop being worth the price premium. Me too find the 35/2 asph a perfect lens... but admit that sometimes would like to have one stop more... but not a need to justify the costly switch: I have the old Lux preasph but frankly I prefer the risk of a longer time to the risk of using the old Lux wide open ... Lord Fluff Posted July 17, 2011 Share #25 Posted July 17, 2011 It's not. Ohhhhhhhh yes it is! I thought my cron asph would be a lens for life, such was the enthusiasm round here for it. Fact is, we never bonded. Yes, it's lovely and small but the results were solid dependable and unexciting. I've used the Lux asph on one job and just loved the results - it has a magic (I know, I know.....) to it that I am smitten with. I value the extra stop, but it's not the only thing about it for me. It's a classic case of YMMV.
StephenPatterson Posted July 18, 2011 Share #26 Posted July 18, 2011 Everyone should have ONE fast lens in the arsenal. For me it's the new 50 Summilux ASPH. For others it's the Noctilux. My 35 Summicron is my workhorse, and she's staying put... Just my humble opinion...your mileage may vary.

Fotofanatiker Posted July 18, 2011 Share #29 Posted July 18, 2011 Everyone should have ONE fast lens in the arsenal. The main reason for me to spend lots of money on Leica gear is the optical quality of their glas wide open, that's why I buy the fastest lenses I can afford - like the 35 Summilux FLE (and a 24mm SX plus 75 SC, that's all I ever wanted. Now I'm broke but happy).
Lord Fluff Posted July 20, 2011 Share #30 Posted July 20, 2011 Sounds like a good decision! Enjoy. Actually sounds like it wasn't so much a decision as a missed opportunity - and with 35 Lux asph lenses, a rare one. As I said in my first post - one simply cannot debate such purchases, you either buy immediately and decide later if it was a good idea, or someone else will beat you to it. Had I paused for thought with mine I'd have missed it, and I'm very glad I didn't. Still, the cron asph is a favourite for many, and may serve you better than the quirky Lux in any case. But if the 1.4 itch happens again, be prepared to scratch it instantly.....
