WillD Posted July 8, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted July 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was wondering whether anyone could recommend a good photography course that was either focused on rangefinders or at least not entirely devoted to the multitude of options that are available on a modern DSLR? Â I live in London, am new to rangefinders (having just bought an M9) and an amateur/enthusiast that would love to brush up on all the basics but also get to grips fully with the potential of the M9. Â And whilst I wait to enrol, any good books that I can gorge myself on (I think I've consumed all the available websites and blogs!)? Â Thanks as ever. Advertisement Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Hi WillD, Take a look here Rangefinder course?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted July 8, 2011 Share #2  Posted July 8, 2011 The Leica shop in Bruton Place run a number of courses for the RF shooter. I think some of them are even free if you have bought an M body.  And whilst I wait to enrol, any good books that I can gorge myself on  Robert Frank's The Americans is as good as any. WillD Posted July 8, 2011 Author Share #3 Â Posted July 8, 2011 Thanks Wattsy, I had seen the 'courses' available at the Lecia Shop, although they seemed a little bit more like a two hour intro session. However I shall give them a try for a start and then take it from there. Â Thanks again.
andybarton Posted July 8, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted July 8, 2011 The course at Leica Mayfair is an all day job, IIRC, and much more than just an intro. Have a look at their website.
wattsy Posted July 8, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted July 8, 2011 I think they do longer courses as well. I think you have to pay for these but I seem to recall the costs are reasonable. Probably best sending a PM to Brett on this forum.
bill Posted July 8, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted July 8, 2011 "Rangefinder, Equipment, History, Techniques", by Roger Hicks is an excellent read. I'd also look out for a secondhand copy of "The Leica Way" by Andrew Matheson. Â Regards, Â Bill
Jager Posted July 8, 2011 Share #7  Posted July 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) As for books, Gunter Osterloh's "Advanced Photo School" will provide a very comprehensive review of general rangefinder practice. It speaks only to film Leica's, but nearly everything everything in the book also applies to the M8 and M9.  Amazon.com: Leica M: Advanced Photo School, 2nd Edition (A Lark Photography Book) (9781454700692): Gunter Osterloh: Books  A recently-released book specific to the M9 is David Taylor's "Expanded Guide." I have my copy here in front of me, but have not read it yet. It does look quite good.  Amazon.com: Leica M9 (The Expanded Guide) (9781907708060): David Taylor: Books
Falstaff Posted July 9, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted July 9, 2011 You bought an M9 on a whim? The Londoners have frequent get togethers and having gate crashed a few, can tell you they are very friendly and apart from walking about, also sit in a pub and talk about gear. I would advise you to go to the next one which I think is very soon. The other advice you've also had is very good. Falstaff

As you live in London, I would definitely book a half-day course with Brett. You will learn a lot and have the freedom to try different lenses which is helpful for future purchases. If you need more, follow up with a full day with Brett. You will have an expert at your elbow and time to sort out your operational techniques. You will be inspired to take better photographs.
