Just ordered an X1

Hello

I've been lurking in this forum for awhile , and thinking a long time about changing direction in my camera.

I've sold my dSLR and just ordered an X1, with a thumbs up, and external view finder.

I wanted a smaller camera that I could carry with me alot more, and be able to take more photographs.

I've been really impressed by the image quality and take some of the downsides of the X1 as just being no more than trying to search for the perfect camera.

I'll post some images up once I receive the X1 - I also ordered a spare (extra ) battery - seeing as the battery life is not too great.

I saw your post earlier - I to was in the same position, decided to sell my dSLR and move over to a simpler camera that I could carry around with me.

I suppose I got fed up of the weight , bulk and amount of gear I had accumulated to take photographs.

Looking forward to a simpler photography style.

Should be with me tomorrow.

Let me know your initial impressions. I don't think mine will be in until Wed. I will miss a lot of features of the D3s (obviously lol) but I am ready for a simpler life and the challenge of using the X1 (in a good way).

...think of the "extras" on dSLRs as crutches and watch your technique improve, Denis - particularly if you shoot in manual mode. Hope you enjoy the journey as well as the the destination.

Quick note to any potential responders - this is a personal opinion, so there is no point engaging me on it.

Congrats on the X1 purchase. I've had mine for several months now (so I'm still a novice with it) and carry it slung over my neck for hours at a time without even thinking about it. I have a Nikon D7000 as well with a lovely 50 1.4 lens that has wonderful Bokeh, but whose weight I quickly start to feel. I love my Leica.

I love my X-1.Had a X100 but sold it because I preferred the IQ of the X1.Just splurged and bought a SF-58 flash and it's just great with the X-1...especially the bounce.I fully intend on buying an X-2 whenever it's released.I have a Nikon D3s for serious shooting but the X-1 is the camera I use the most..Slip a polarizer on this gem and it's just fantastic.I have a sumptuous Artist&Artisan black leather half case which is wonderful. You will love it!

...quick question, Dsg - is there anything substantive a Nikon D3s + 35/2.8 lens can do that an X1 can't (besides focus quicker)?

That's easy... It can take 9 shots per second and can buffer 36 shots before slowing down. It's 51-point auto-focus can track moving targets even when they are briefly occluded. It's sensor has a 3 stop advantage in low light. You can put a 35/1.4 lens on it which will then have 5 stop advantage in low light vs the X1. The shutter can go to 1/8000 which is great for freezing action and shooting in bright light with wide aperture. It has a great OVF with 100% coverage.

Lol, the D3s can do many thinks other DSLR's can't. Two different leagues.

...hmmm, sounds like a lot of tech to compensate for a distinct lack of technique, if you ask me. I do like the sound of all that hard-core shutter action and buffering, though. There I was thinking I was pretty specific with the "Nikon D3s + 35/2.8 lens" criterion, but never mind. Thanks all the same, noirist.

Welcome to the forum! I must say that it surprises me to find such a bulky flash unit attached to an X1; but doubtless you have a good reason. If size and bulk becomes an issue, why not explore using a smaller flash with off-camera lead? I occasionally use my SF20 off-camera in manual mode. That would give you a versatile bounce in a compact package.

...not D3s, Sgt93, but "D3s + 35/2.8". Not a big deal, anyhows. Thanks.

That is still my answer. The glass is only part of it, the electronics another. completely different animals where one is good at pretty much everything (including breaking your back and bank account lol) and the other is, well, I will let you know after I get mine tomorrow. :)

Mine arrives Thursday, all being well, so very excited. Keeping my dSLR (Sony Alpha 700) as I have some good glass for it, but selling my Nex5 and 2 kit lenses. I'll start posting some images from the X1 soon, I hope!

Thanks...after shooting with a Nikon D3S and the Nikon 200 2.0 beast nothing seems heavy or unbalanced....I got a great deal on the sf-58 and love the power of this flash which is very beneficial using bounce....but your correct,it is a bit large for the X-1 but really not a big deal for me.
