I'm planning to buy my first ever Leica lens for my m9 next month, i'm planning to buy the 35mm summilux and summicron 50mm, my problem is...will I buy brand new one or used? There are many used lenses on ebay and I don't know what the series of lenses are a good buy. Brand new ones are always out of stock. Please help. Thank you.

I'm a believer in used equipment if it hasn't been used for news photography. People generally take very good care of this equipment and the descriptions I've found on ebay have been pretty accurate for me. Bought my 35 and 75 new and everything else has been used with no issues that I can see. Just look very closely at the ebay images and if you see anything at all you don't like then pass on the item.

I have the new 35 SLX FLE, after a long wait; worth it -- remarkable lens. I never owned the previous version; you can get it second hand, but since its still fairly pricey I'd actually go for the new one. But get the 50 Summicron first. I own it, and also the 50 SLX ASPH. The latter is remarkable, a lens that tempts you to rhapsodize about "the Leica look." But the Summicron is still terrific; compact, sharp, with a lovely look of its own. And since it's been around for a long time you can find far more reasonably priced examples on the used market. So, as a first lens, that would be my choice.

If you want to buy second hand lenses you should be aware of prices which are sometimes exaggerated - especially in Europe. For the 35mm Summlix asph (version before the actual FLE) some people demand prices which are higher than at times when the lens was last in the catalogue. Also for the 2/50mm Summicron (current version) I often find prices at about 1300,-€ for lenses which are ten or more years old - much more then they costed then.

It may be more reasonable to wait some time - or look for a new Summarit - than to become the victim of the present boom on the second hand market.

agree

occasionally reasonably priced ones come onto the market but you have to be very vigilant, looking frequently at all the 2nd hand websites.

the summarits are a great range and the contrast and flare of the 50mm is apparently better then the cron. The cron has the advance of slightly more detail between f2.5 and f4

IIR there was a few long threads on the pre FLE 35/1.4 (the non rattling version) with focus shift probs on the M9/8. Hence the birth of the Son of Lux FLE.

The pre FLE ASPH may be more of a miss then a hit for you by many user accounts. While I use it on an MP an am very happy, on a digi sensor you may run into those problems.

While you wait for a new FLE, Zeiss never has made a bad Biogon.
