MarkP Posted June 24, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Summitar 50/2.0 (c.1948), Noctilux 50/1.0, ZM C Sonnar. All shot at f4.0, M9, DNGs straight out of the camera Full image & 100% crops shown Hand held which may explain some differences @ 1/60 sec. I shot foliage for the colour, and as it is always a challenge for OOF areas. Unfortunately I don't have my 50 Summilux ASPH around at the moment but will re-compare all four lenses again soon. As expected the Sumitar demonstrates softness & low contrast, soft edges, poor out-of-focus rendering, and flares readily. However I like the softness and colour of the greenery, especially the ivy, and the tones in B&W. Mark Summitar f4.0 Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Hi MarkP, Take a look here 50mm lens comparisons: Noctilux, Summitar, C Sonnar. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
MarkP Posted June 24, 2011 Author Share #2 Posted June 24, 2011 Hi Paul, Yes, the Summitar's B&Ws have a really nice feel to them, and I was surprised by the colour rendition. However, out-of-focus areas aren't great, and flare is a big problem so I have to be really careful where I'm pointing the lens (I have the original hood fitted). Perhaps this is a bit worse than it should be due to the lens elements having some minor hazing that can't be removed. I also agree about the Sonnar's characteristics. I'm still very new to this lens but am very pleased that I bought it (a bargain compared to the cost of the Summilux). As I mentioned above, once I have the 50 Summilux ASPH (latest version) back I'll post some comparisons. I wonder whether I'll end up doing the same as Bill Plamer who was so impressed with his Sonnar that he sold his Summilux 50 ASPH. Considering it's scarcity it might even recoup it's original cost and that of the Sonnar:D Mark
Ecar Posted June 25, 2011 Share #3 Posted June 25, 2011 The old Summitar is still a great lens - I bought one really cheap years ago and I am still blown away by the way it renders B&W. +1. You may also want to try an even older Summar (hard to find in good condition, though). You'll be in for an interesting ride.
