I'll be in Melbourne next week and will have some time to spare, so thought I'd do a camera shop crawl. My interests are Leica, Hasselblad, Rollei etc, and I was hoping to get some recommendations for places to check out. As I recall from earlier visits, there are several shops quite close together downtown. Thanks in advance.

Hi I visit those from out of state.

Camera Exchange that used to be in the CBD has moved out to Box hill

You can find Ted's at 235 Elizabeth St, Camera House at 217, Michaels on the corner with Lonsdale st (great museum is a must see) and close by round the corner is Camera lane who are also a Leica dealer and used gear seller (391 Little Bourke St).

Enjoy!

Can't help you from Sydney, but we Australians should list the prime Australian sites (geographic & perhaps internet) for 'camera shop crawls' (especially for Leica & M-mount glass) in each major Australian city (beats pub crawls:D). It would be a good reference site.

In Sydney I know Foto Riesel (who are outstanding to deal with, have a large and interesting range of used equipment, but are low on Leica glass) and Grace's Cameras in Kings Cross (with very few M-mount lenses and of poor quality).

I asked a similar question back in January in this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/160333-m9-melbourne.html

There were some excellent replies, so well worth browsing through.

+1 for the suggestion to visit Michael's Camera museum -- I was amazed and intrigued by the extent of the collection.

That said, I did not buy anything while in Melbourne. Australian prices are higher than I am used to in the UK or the US and this is reflected in second-hand prices as well.

Great photo opportunities -- just walking around the city gave me a wonderful portfolio of shots, with trams, rain/sunshine, 19th century buildings, river views, bridges, botanical gardens, etc. So do enjoy that side of it as well as cruising the stores.

Robert,

Thanks for mentioning that thread.

You're right about prices, it was more for browsing. The Australian dollar is so strong at the moment that buying overseas (internet or in person) is cheap (relatively).
