jplomley Posted June 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I went to order some Epson paper yesterday from B&H, my preferred provider due to the fact there is a $60 price difference on a 24" roll of premium luster, the paper I prefer to use for proofing before ripping on the more expensive Hahnemuhle Gloss Baryta 320. I was told that Epson has ordered all USA providers to cease international shipments, and that includes Canada. I called Epson yesterday to inquire about this large disparity in pricing of paper and inks between Canada and the USA, even though are dollar is at parity or better. And why can I no longer order my Epson supplies from the USA. The pre-sales rep had no idea and I was hung up on as I was being transferred to Customer Relations. Nice. Needless to say, this recent policy of Epsons coupled with the large disparity in pricing has really pissed me off. I was very very close to order the 9890 this week, but have now decided to have a look at the Canon and HP large format printers instead. Epson has lost my business. Bill Allsopp Posted June 22, 2011 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2011 Sounds pretty poor to me. I have seen the output from both large format HP and new Canon machines at a print shop near me and they are excellent. I think they are both overhauling Epson; you will not be wasting your time having a look.
jplomley Posted June 22, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted June 22, 2011 Cheers Bill. I've had no problems with the 7800 I've been running for the past five years, but wanted to step up in format as I hope to have an S2 by years end. Until this recent shipping policy enforced by Epson, I was a happy and loyal customer. The fellow I was speaking to at B&H said they have been inundated with complaints, and of course they are losing a significant amount of business. Hopefully there will be enough kick-back that Epson will reverse this policy.
Jeff S Posted June 23, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 23, 2011 I'm a fan of B&H and Epson, but as a US resident, I had no idea of Epson's policy. Very surprising...and disappointing. Can't speak for other printers, but I will say that there are other fine papers out there. I love Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta and Photo Rag Pearl, primarily for b/w, and Ilford Gold Fibre Silk for color. I'm doing a show with these, using the 3800, and the results are terrific. I've also seen great results from some Canson papers. Hope Epson corrects its ways; good luck either way. Jeff
jplomley Posted June 23, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted June 23, 2011 Agreed Jeff...I only use the Epson Premium Luster as a proofing paper. I use Hahnemuhle Gloss Baryta 320 for all my street work and their Fine Art Pearl for my large format landscape prints. For matte, its tough to beat Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308.
