Advertisement Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Hi mobeyone, Take a look here M8 Battery.. Hissing when on charge?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted June 16, 2011 Share #2 Posted June 16, 2011 It is when it starts ticking that you should worry. Seriously - never heard of this one.
mobeyone Posted June 16, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted June 16, 2011 Scared in case it blows up! its a strange hiss that emits when plugged in.. dont have the ticking.. yet! But there is no change in usage etc, contacts are clean and no rattling or anything inside....
Gerard Posted June 16, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 16, 2011 First thing that came to mind was 'snake', but then you said it wasn't a rattler. I bit the bullet the other day and bought a spare. Cost £70, but if it works as well as the three year old OE unit; I'll be well chuffed. Have to say I wouldn't feel to happy about leaving a hissing battery charging in my house. giordano Posted June 16, 2011 Share #5 Posted June 16, 2011 I'd worry about it bursting into flames, especially if it's a cheapo eBay special. I wouldn't want to leave the house while it was charging; might even be worried enough to dispose of it. There's much less room for error and mishaps in charging lithium cells than older types. mobeyone Posted June 16, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted June 16, 2011 Its a Leica original! I only have it on charge if I am in the house.... hate to have to throw it away... but then again)
ho_co Posted June 16, 2011 Share #7 Posted June 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) You're sure it's the battery and not the charger? I don't recall--does the M8 charger have the ability to charge from automobile battery? IOW, it might be worthwhile to check out another charger or another power source as well as another battery. Strange symptom.
StephenPatterson Posted June 17, 2011 Share #8 Posted June 17, 2011 I doubt it's the battery pack, more than likely it's an electrolytic cap getting ready to let go in the charger.
giordano Posted June 17, 2011 Share #9 Posted June 17, 2011 I doubt it's the battery pack, more than likely it's an electrolytic cap getting ready to let go in the charger. My first thought was the charger too - except that the OP said the noise doesn't occur when charging his second battery.
StephenPatterson Posted June 17, 2011 Share #10 Posted June 17, 2011 I'm not familiar with the charger design, but if the "hissing" pack is drawing more amps from the charger that the "normal" pack it could be pushing an electrolytic cap to failure. Electrolytic caps are designed to vent and blow out the bottom instead of just exploding during failure (although that does happen from time to time). Yes, that was my thought too but the sound only comes when the second battery is used... strange thing is though that it does sound as if it is coming from inside the charger?
