The M8 will never get manual lens selection.

And why not?

It is a simple software feature. Coding of the lenses is only binary information to the processor that can also go via the database, such as the M9. Encode the lenses is business, I see no other reason.

Manually select the lenses in the Leica M8, I do not think I sold less M9. I buy the M9 for photographic reasons (full frame, better ISO, for example), not for software features. I do not understand that this feature is added to the firmware for the M8.

With respect how can you be so certain about this without having seen the source code and having an understanding of embedded software? Things that quite often look 'simple' and 'obvious' quite often aren't.

According to Leica it’s technically impossible, probably due to memory constraints. So it’s either that or Leica is lying and they just don’t want to do it. Take your pick. The conclusion would be the same either way: It won’t happen.

There was a small window of opportunity when the M9 was developed and manual lens selection implemented; if retrofitting that feature to the M8 had been possible from a technical and viable from a business perspective it would have happened then. But it didn’t. Now it is out of the question. Getting Jenoptik to refactor or rewrite the old code base to find a way to cram in a new feature that late in the game just wouldn’t make sense, especially when it is far from clear that they would succeed.

Well - I just made a BW print for my hallway of my family- the 3D effect people sometimes talks about just became clear to me. I have the M8 with the previous firmwire release..... If the camera can delivere these kind of enlargement - with or without - iso butons / lens menuse or what ever - I will still be very pleased.

My D700 - full frame ISO insane - is excellent but this is still another animal ....

Basically - it is greate customer focus to increase speed and add new lenses to such an old digital product. Also this old product produce absolutely relevent results, (even though it is quite picky with exposure :D)

I will pick the next M-camera, (9 or 10 or ....) just for the pleasure of enjoying the enlargements.

:p
