Now I wonder if (and when) S and M lenses also will receive the nano surface coating ...
Not necessary as we all know that the current products (M9 and all M lenses) cannot be improved (by definition).:D

I have one and it's one heck of a lens on a GF1.

I assume you mean the existing four thirds 50/1.4? This is the new micro 43rds version and I will have one as soon as I can get it.

With the rumoured 24/2 (all metal build with distance scale) on track to be announced by Olympus on 30th June you'd have quite a useful little kit for any m43rds camera.

What surprises me is that Leica already dismissed the whole four thirds thing a few months ago and here it is lending its name (willingly or otherwise) to another lens.

I bet Panasonic sell more of these in a year than the whole output of lenses from Solms. Kinda makes you wonder about Leica's overall business plan...

I am on a call list for this one, sold the 20mm for this 25mm. Price should to be around 600.00 we will see.

Great for when I don't want to carry around the M9 and with the 100-300mm fills my long tele needs just fine.

Just seen the samples at Dpreview. Now, I definitely want one. Quite surprised at how much sharper the 25/1.4 is over the 20/1.7. Did not expect the 20/1.7 could be bettered (and have always suspected it is a Leica by another name).

I would not want to make a definitive statement on the basis of these two shots, but the edge definition of the Leica lens in the brick wall images seems to be lower than the Panasonic. Maybe it's due to the extra half stop of the Leica, but the ability to shoot wide open is a significant reason for choosing the faster and more expensive lens.

DOF differs in the two portrait shots, probably due to the slightly different framing and closer shooting distance for the Panasonic, which makes a comparison more difficult.

From what I can see here, there is not much in it in the centre, but I would prefer to see a test undertaken in more controlled conditions before coming to any conclusion. As Louis says, the Panasonic is a very good lens, so improving on it is quite a challenge.

At another forum someone has pointed out that the 25/1.4 shows purple CA around the white stripes on the clothing of the comparison shot. Disappointing! I wonder if the Panny cameras need a firmware update to get the best out of the new lens?

Louis, a firmware upgrade might resolve the CA issue, but it probably would not do much for the reduced definition at the edges. Assuming that it really is the problem that the two comparison shots of the wall suggest it could be. It's difficult to be categoric on the basis of evaluating just these two images, but possibly there is some trading on the Leica brand reputation going on here. The lens might bear the Summilux name, but on this evidence that might be misleading. :(

Incidentally, would any firmware upgrade be in the lens or the camera? I would have thought that the lens holds the necessary instructions to tell the camera what corrections to apply. Otherwise, Panasonic and Olympus would have to upgrade the firmware in every M4/3 camera produced to date to avoid restricting sales to owners of current models.

The sample pics where shot with the G3 I wonder what the results would be using the GH2?

I think the G3 and GH2 use the same sensor, need to see more sample shots and reviews.

  • 2 weeks later...

There is a preview of the new Summilux lens at Luminous Landscape, in conjunction with a review of the G3.

Panasonic G3 Review

The conclusion matches what can be observed in the test shots on the other sites. This is not a bad lens by any means and it is unrealistic to expect it to match its equivalent bigger M brother at the price. Its biggest potential problem as already observed and which the article does not address, could be that the Panasonic 20 lens matches or perhaps even exceeds its performance at a lower cost.
