Open Letter to Leica — 10 Ways To Improve the M9 Rangefinder

Why can't people just enjoy what they have instead of always wanting something better?

Do you marry your girlfriend and hope that she gets upgrades every 2 years? No, you learn her quirks and she learns yours and you grow old and be happy together.

Granted an M9 does not age like a human, you should be even more satisfied.

I still choose to believe that most happy M9 users are out there shooting and too busy to participate in these forums, leaving a majority of dissatisfied users who will never be happy even if every item on their list is fulfilled in the next M.

If Leica adopts just a few of the items on Diglloyd's list, then those who are MOST critical of him now will also be the FIRST to buy the new model and talk about it on this forum. In particular, greater resolution, speed, dynamic range and high ISO will be seen as absolutely worth the upgrade. Let's recall how we vigorously defended the M8 as "all I'll ever need" and criticized those who suggested any improvements, but then rushed to order the M9 as quickly as humanly possible. :D

That's very well said.

Unfortunately, none of it is true. :D

Still, Zlatko, this blog displays an astounding lack of knowledge. My grandmother always told me : "Better keep your mouth shut and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.."

I think that's it right there. Too much time complaining, not enough shooting. And you nailed it - even if every checkbox is ticked on everyone's wishlists... I give it a week before a new thread pops up, saying, "hey, that new ____ could be better..." Ugh.

Remember when cameras had FOUR controls? ISO, focus, aperture and shutter speed. A box with a lens. Made lots of people happy for a long, long time. Anything more than that is fluff anyway. :p

Good analogy on the girlfriend. Heh. "Upgrades."

Wow; I just got around to actually reading that tripe. I resisted, because I've heard it all before - and I was right. Seriously?

1) Go buy a MF camera and quit your whining. (36MP? Have you SEEN the price of MF cameras with such sensors?)

2) Any focus error is MY fault. I shoot both an f/1.1 lens and a 135mm on the M9 with no problems!

3) Maybe don't frame so tightly? I've yet to chop off a head.

4) Okay, maybe. But I use the LCD for the histogram and battery level. Not previewing images and peeping pixels - that's what a computer is for.

5) See #4.

6) See #4.

7) Noise? Learn exposure and how to post-process. DR? The M8/M9 have some of the best DR I've ever seen. I can recover highlights and bump shadows very easily.

8) I shoot at ISO 2500 and do not use NR in post except in rare cases. If I wanted mushy, plastic images I'd shoot a DSLR at 12,500. See #7.

9) Ever heard of Bulb mode?

9) Then don't buy one - stick to your X100

Wow. And that's all I'm going to say on this matter. Sounds like Mr. Lloyd needs to stick to P&S.

Hi

I cannot find the ISO on my IIIC, where is it?

Open letter to Diglloyd

Why buy a M9? Because I want one!

CCD - Good enough for me

Focus - Better than AF

Frame line - It's a RF stupid

LCD - no need

Image review - Why?

Speed it up - What's the rush

Sensor noise and dynamic range - Bracket

ISO - 800 it's all I need

18 MP - plenty for me

Long shutter speeds - no need

Cost - Sure I'll buy 3 of them

Best regard!

We'll see how much of it is true. :D

Perhaps, but some of his suggestions would cause another huge rush to upgrade, as we saw with the M9. Think about it ... greater resolution, greater speed, greater dynamic range, better high ISO, better LCD ... what's not to like with those? You don't think they are coming?

Get a 28MP or 36MP sensor into an M10, which will not only deliver more detail, but reduce the excessive aliasing problems.

The tiny pixel wells of such a sensor will introduce more problems than benefits.

Funny, my grandmother told me the exact same thing...

ISO - 800 it's all I need

18 MP - plenty for me

Heard that before with the M8, except the numbers were lower:

ISO - 400 it's all I need

10 MP - plenty for me

Anyone who suggested improvements was scolded and told to buy a DSLR. But on 9/9/09, it was "Wooohooo! Got my M9 on the first day! Wow -- better high ISO! More resolution! Better framelines, etc.! Who wants to buy my M8?!" This pattern is predictable now. :)

^ Entirely too true. I won't go so far as to say "all I'll ever need" when it comes to technology. As we know, it's a constantly moving target. And who wouldn't want an ISO 25,600 camera that shoots 50MP images that are super smooth and do HDR out of the box? ;)

I vaguely recall some idiot saying "all you'll ever need is 640KB."

I temper my expectations of technology with a little reality. And dreaming of the future doesn't prevent me from enjoying what I've got today.

Back in 08 bought an M8, didn't like it exchange for a D700. Last march exchange my D700 for the M9, love it. But yes maybe one day I'll change again because it's human nature, we always want more. :)

You are, of course, correct.

This forum exhibits such a healthy degree of competitive discussion and relentlesst point-scoring that it is inconceivable that there wouldn't be amongst its population a significant number quick to feel a keen need for an M10, matched by a similar number spurred to a chivalrous defense of their current darling, whatever it may be.

We are all frail humans!

If the question was something along the lines of “Suppose we gave you more of everything and the camera would be even smaller – and did we mention it would also be much more affordable – how would you like that?” … Unfortunately things are rarely that simple.
