pico Posted July 14, 2011 Share #61 Posted July 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is the 0.58 viewfinder intrinsically more delicate than a standard 0.72? I can't see why. My brand new, a-la-carte MP with it's 0.58 had to go back to Solms two days after I bought it because the rangefinder was misaligned. It came back having had €320 of work done. . Yes it is a shame. Why am I so blessed to never have such problems? I have a 35mm pre-ASPH dedicated to a 0.58 on an M7. Never went bad. Sorry to hear of your problem! andybarton Posted July 26, 2011 Author Share #64 Posted July 26, 2011 The camera arrived back on the 15th July and everything is as it should be.
wattsy Posted July 26, 2011 Share #65 Posted July 26, 2011 That was pretty quick. My MP has been in Solms for most of the month for RF calibration and some other checks and tweaks. It is essentially a new camera (bought in January and used only for 3 or 4 rolls of film) but Solms have apparently identified it requires at least two parts replacing. andybarton Posted July 26, 2011 Author Share #66 Posted July 26, 2011 Mine just needed a 5 minute tweak to the VF - no parts.
Checkland Posted July 27, 2011 Share #67 Posted July 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm hoping mine will be back within a month otherwise I'll be back in England and my camera and lenses in Italy, the leica shop said it would be a month tops, is this usually correct? robert blu Posted July 27, 2011 Share #68 Posted July 27, 2011 I'm hoping mine will be back within a month otherwise I'll be back in England and my camera and lenses in Italy, the leica shop said it would be a month tops, is this usually correct? A couple of years ago I had to send my m7 0.58 to Solms for RF calibration and some more control before the warranty time expired. The italian importer (Polyphoto) told me 4 weeks time was necessary. It was a moment in which I did not need the camera and inside myself I said it was ok even if probably it could be a longer time. But in the middle of the third week they called and told me that next week I could pick up my camera ! It really was 4 weeks! Now it is summer time maybe this could cause some shipping problems, just my thinking... robert
wattsy Posted July 29, 2011 Share #69 Posted July 29, 2011 Mine just needed a 5 minute tweak to the VF - no parts. Fair enough. Leica UK have been unfailingly polite and informative and apparently my MP will be back next week (approximately a month away). It turns out that, rather than adjust it, Solms have decided to completely rebuild the RF. They are also replacing the lens mount and the baseplate. All on a camera bought brand new this year and used for 3 rolls of film.
andybarton Posted July 29, 2011 Author Share #70 Posted July 29, 2011 All very odd. So long as it's sorted properly, that's the main thing.
Ronan Posted July 29, 2011 Share #71 Posted July 29, 2011 All very odd. So long as it's sorted properly, that's the main thing. Is it? Paying premium prices to receive a lemon that fails and fails... I would be royally piss. Time (and pleasure) lost. Value decreased (a lemon is a lemon, even after being repaired). The scary thing is i hear more and more of those stories. My M6 classic is at the shop. Broken frame counter and getting it a CLA since its 'only' a couple hundred more. I have SLR's in horrible conditions that STILL work PERFECTLY. Never had any issues with my D3 and D300 ether (or any other camera, from lomography camera's to beat up Nikon slr's). My faith in Leica durability and build is quite shaken... gyoung Posted July 29, 2011 Share #72 Posted July 29, 2011 When I was working for a retailer in the 60s, sending an M2, 3 or 4 back for warranty repair was so rare as to be in 'blue moon' territory. I think it is amazing that they can't put an MP together without faults, and even more so that it gets out of the factory like that, its a premium product and warranty repairs would be bad enough, but from new? Keith (M) Posted April 8, 2012 Share #73 Posted April 8, 2012 Andy - am resurrecting this thread to enquire how your 0.58 MP ALC has been since it's 'second fix'? At present I am seriously considering ordering a similar item but am concerned about the potential 'sensitivity' of the 0.58 viewfinder. Mind you, as the M7 (0.72) I bought new in early 2011 had a horizontally misaligned viewfinder and then electronically died a death after nine months gentle use, maybe it is more a question of how much faith one can have in any new film M! One would hope/trust that an ALC order would not inflict such unwelcome trauma on the paying customer.
