mmanda Posted June 6, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted June 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone! Â I've been lurking in here (X1 forum) for a long time now and have decided to make my first Leica a X1. Â I'm in the process of selling off some of my Canon gear (not the DSLR just a few lenses) to help afford the X1. So whilst I can probably scrape together enough to buy a brand new X1 I thought I should do my homework and see what possible trouble I could get in by buying used. Â I have a few questions and wanted to gain the experience of this forum prior to ponying up my hard earned for said camera! Â Is the warranty provided International? ie I'm in Australia if I got one from the USA, would the warranty be valid here? I know Canon don't for eg Is there anything on these cameras that is known to fail and cost me $ to get fixed? Or is it just too risky, buy a new one and be done with it? Â I'm well aware of the cameras pit falls as far as slow AF goes.. I figure I have my 60D, flash and lenses for those times when I want to shoot something fast. I want the X1 as a daily companion to take everywhere with me. Â Thanks in advance for any guidance you guys can give me cheers Amanda

Sausalito Posted June 6, 2011 Share #2  Posted June 6, 2011 Amanda-  Buying used electronics is often a good deal... depending on the trustworthiness of the seller.  If you buy on eBay, just be sure you can get a refund after a reasonable time of examination. If you are buying from a shop, they will probably warrant it for a short while...  I think if you get your hands on one, you will be able to see any defects in very short order.  On the other hand, if the savings isn't substantial, go for a new one.  Sorry this doesn't answer the question... there is no real answer.  Either way... enjoy your new pocket camera  cheers,  tom
mmanda Posted June 6, 2011 Author Share #3  Posted June 6, 2011 Thanks Tom... I hear you loud and clear. I know there's no clear cut answer to my question, just thought I'd get the opinions of a few on here. I'm also guessing I'm not the only one wondering about this subject too... so be nice to hear why others chose new vs used too  One thing I do know, I'll certainly enjoy my new pocket camera once I get it! Can't wait.. I'm very excited.
spylaw4 Posted June 6, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted June 6, 2011 The standard Leica warranty is international and transferable (should be 2 years). Any reputable (Leica) dealer will give you a warranty of a decent duration on a pre-owned X-1. If you do go for pre-owned then make sure it is boxed with the Leica outer and all the original bits and papers - you really do want the box - it's a work of packaging art! Ultimately you have to decide whether the reduction in price vs. cost of new X-1 with full warranty is worth it. But either way you won't regret buying it! jippiejee Posted June 6, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted June 6, 2011 When comparing prices of new vs used, keep in mind that with a new one Lightroom 3 is included, which cannot be transfered to the new owner.
wda Posted June 6, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted June 6, 2011 The savings on a good used X1 would be minimal. For peace of mind and the full package, I strongly suggest you buy new.

For peace of mind and the full package, I strongly suggest you buy new. Â Thanks David. After doing more research on used prices since making this post, I can see that as well. I would also like Lightroom. So I'll go for a new one and pick it up locally. Â Thanks for all the comments.

Your dealer will appreciate your custom and you will appreciate his support in the future. Good dealer/customer relationships are priceless. mironathetin Posted June 8, 2011 Share #9  Posted June 8, 2011 When comparing prices of new vs used, keep in mind that with a new one Lightroom 3 is included, which cannot be transfered to the new owner.  That is not true. Adobe allows selling of software and helps to transfer the license. This can be found in every Adobe license agreement. It is necessary to find a seller who cooperates though. Some X1 owners did not register Lightroom. This is the easiest option. A mail to Leica and camera and Software will be registered for a new user.  I bought a used X1 and saved 1/3 of the price. Lightroom was unregistered. Worked fine.
StephenPatterson Posted June 8, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted June 8, 2011 I bought a used X1 this Spring in Hong Kong, and on reflection I wish I had bought new. I ended up saving about $300, and the camera works perfectly, but after I got home I began to notice lots of little things. The LCD screen had more scratches than I noticed in the store. And the box (which is a fantastic if superfluous part of the X1 experience) was a bit knackered. And the instruction manual had lots of notations in Chinese. And the Leica pouch was missing. Everything works, the paint, lens, knobs are all good...but I still wish I had bought new. Â Am I being too picky? Probably. Do I wish now I had bought new? Definitely. abrewer Posted June 8, 2011 Share #11  Posted June 8, 2011 Most photogs take good care of their stuff  I'd not be too worried buying used; but insist on right of return within 30 days just in case  Warehouse Deals is Amazon's returned and open box website--might want to look on there for a deal
mmanda Posted June 9, 2011 Author Share #12 Â Posted June 9, 2011 Thanks for the further comments. I realised the other day I've never bought a used camera so far. So I'll still continue that and get the X1 new. Now that its closer to $2k than 3k like when it was realised in Aus, its a bit more economical.. especially with the LR licence.. which is SW I'd like to have. Â I'm a week away from buying one. Hopefully I can still find a black one
py6km Posted June 9, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted June 9, 2011 Sounds like a good plan. I bought a used silver X1 from a reputable dealer and sent it back as every 20/30th image had some diabolical banding on it. I subsequently bought a new one (in black, as I'd originally wanted) and it's fine. I've never had a problem with any 2nd hand electronics before mind you, so was just unlucky I guess, but you do have to be careful. If I'd bought privately, I may have been stuffed. I'm sure there are many fine used X1's around, but there's nothing like having something which nobody has ever had their greasy mits on before!
