Ted W Posted May 31, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Title says it. Does anyone care to comment on just the color emulations from Nik v. Alien Skin? Not concerned with the filters or b/w. Thanks.
Advertisement Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Hi Ted W, Take a look here Comparison, please: Color Efex v. Alien Skin color only. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
250swb Posted May 31, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 31, 2011 Not tried Alien Skin and I'm not sure many people will have both. But I have Color Efex and it is a stonking bit of kit. I think you generally should import a lower contrast image into it or some of the parameters can look crude in default mode, but other than that the controls are far and away easier than adjusting the same things in Photoshop and without the need for multiple layers and masks. Ted W Posted May 31, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted May 31, 2011 Thanks. I like Silver Efex very much (although Exposure 3 is just as good quality-wise, but not quite as convenient since they don't have an Aperture plug-in -- they lost a sale there), and the Nik UI in general is very good. I've tried the AS color filters and find only a couple that work for me, but those two or three are quite useable. I was wondering if Nik put as much effort into the color emulations as they did their b/w ones; it seems they want more to highlight the numerous filters available in Color Efex than any other feature. stunsworth Posted June 1, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 1, 2011 I use Alien Skin Exposure 3 and have been very happy with it. The colour conversions work well IMHO, and I almost always use them when processing colour images. No experience of Color Efex I'm afraid, but if there's a free trial (there's a 30 trail if Alien Skin Exposure) why not try both and make up your own mind. All anyone here is going to do is express their preference, and that may be different from yours.
250swb Posted June 1, 2011 Share #5 Posted June 1, 2011 Ted I use Silver Efex as well and the similar tools make it easy to use both. I'm not sure which emulations you mean (as opposed to filters), but if you mean the film effects they are pretty good imo. They do need a bit more tweaking than in Silver Efex because there are more parameters to adjust and fine tune. And as I said before, you do need a very neutral image to start out with and that is half the battle, trying not to make the perfect image in ACR but create something dull and boring to work on! delander † Posted June 1, 2011 Share #6 Posted June 1, 2011 You can colorize a B&W image before you leave Silver Efex Pro, thus converting it into a colour image with various interesting looks. Jeff
Dabow Posted June 1, 2011 Share #7 Posted June 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use CFX Pro from time to time. Although I can achieve similar effects for the looks I'm after in PS alone, there are times when CFX makes life that little bit easier. Great program. Highly recommended.
