A few questions about M8.2 + SF 24D flash unit

Hi All,

Been in lurk mode for a while.

I never thought I would but I just purchased the Leica SF 24D flash for my M8.2. I encountered a number of occasions that made it impossible to get any useable results without a flash. Opening up the lens and bumping up the ISO only gets you so far. The 24D flash and M8.2 are supposed to work well together and from the first few in-house test shots it seems that they do. Not bad at all and not nearly as bad as I anticipated.

I have a few questions that I can't figure out from the manual(s). The flash on TTL mode.

1. The flash position on the shutter dial seems to put the the camera on 1/180sec no matter what? In the VF there's only the triangle LED pointing to the left and the flash symbol, nothing else. So what is the relation/interaction between the flash position on the cameras' shutter dial and the 'Off 1/180' setting in the camera menu under Auto Slow Sync?

2. What does the 'Lens dependent' menu setting in the Auto Slow Sync menu mean/do? The manual is err... very brief about this. As on the other options in this menu for that matter.

Sorry if this are noob questions but the M with a flash is hopelessly new to me... :)

All help appreciated!

Richard

The lens dependent setting takes the sync speed off 180:D

Set the flash to GNC, flash speed to lens dependent, set the camera to A and fire away ;)

Richard--

Lens dependent setting keeps the camera shutter speed from dropping below the reciprocal of the focal length. That's the old rule of thumb for how slow a shutter one can hand-hold.

For example, with a 21mm lens one can theoretically get good results down to 1/20 second hand-held. With a 50mm lens one would expect the lower limit of hand-holding with good results to be about 1/50 sec.

"Lens dependent" would not let the camera drop below the slowest hand-held speed, probably 1/30 and 1/60 in this case.

Hope that helps.
