johnloumiles Posted May 30, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I took a nasty spill in the rain yesterday and of course none other then the X1 helped break my fall. After getting up and examining the camera I noticed a small crack in the casing, nothing too bad. Then the real fun began. The camera turned on fine, everything seemed normal but once I clicked the shutter the exposure, shutter speed and iso went all over the place. The image was extremly overexposed on Auto mode, ISO 650 1/15 and 2.8 in broad daylight. Everytime I pushed the shutter I'd get a wild new result. Manual settings are no different and even if I have the shutter set at 500 it's shooting around 30 and so on and so on. Everything is haywire. Also if I do manage to get focus, upon reviewing the image at 100% the digital grain looks...digital, small squares instead of round pixels. I know I have to send it in and warranty will not cover it but has anyone else had this happen? If so what was the diagnosis and how much did it cost? I'm hoping it's not so much that it becomes cost prohibitive. Thanks for reading and any feedback you might have.

ezc203 Posted May 30, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 30, 2011 Why not give Leica a call? They'll provide much better estimates than anyone else on this forum can.
johnloumiles Posted May 30, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted May 30, 2011 Why not give Leica a call? They'll provide much better estimates than anyone else on this forum can. I know, that's the plan. Just thought I'd get some input. It's like the show House, I'm getting differential diagnosis. It's fun.
spylaw4 Posted May 30, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 30, 2011 I would be reading my insurance policy carefully! Bad luck on the fall BTW!
dkCambridgeshire Posted May 30, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 30, 2011 In the UK it would be repaired or replaced under the Leica Passport accidental damage cover. dunk
ECliffordSmith Posted May 31, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 31, 2011 Hi John, I am sorry to hear about your camera. I broke an X1 when it dropped onto concrete from about 1.5 metres. The screen was cracked and there were numerous severe scratches to almost all surfaces. I dropped the camera off with the dealer approaching a month ago and Leica quoted 400 EUR for a total repair. I suspect your damage is less than mine so I hope you have a lower bill. I am not sure when my camera will be returned, it could be another week or two. Sausalito Posted June 1, 2011 Share #7 Posted June 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) What a shame. I had mine only one week when I dropped it on the sidewalk... off to Leica for new top plate, bottom plate and flash unit... cost $350 which wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. I think you will have to actually send them the camera to find out the cost. Mine went to New Jersey and the service folks are terrific tom
johnloumiles Posted June 1, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted June 1, 2011 Thanks Guys, I'll send it in soon to be looked at. What measures the light coming through the lens? Does it go directly to the sensor? dkpeterborough, why just the UK for the Leica Passport? I live in California.
DaveO Posted June 10, 2011 Share #9 Posted June 10, 2011 Doesn't the camera come with the Passport Warranty? Or isn't that available in the US? If so, doesn't this warranty cover this type of event? For the price of this camera, that warranty should be standard. DaveO
Allnm Posted June 10, 2011 Share #10 Posted June 10, 2011 I think Passport warranty is only available in Europe. Makes a change to get something this good in the UK without paying extra! Allan
andybarton Posted June 10, 2011 Share #11 Posted June 10, 2011 Passport insurance is offered by Leica UK, not Leica Camera themselves.
