I'm here at Indy, watching Monaco on the monitors in the media center, and will be writing about the 500 (the second 100 laps is my assignment)

In the meantime I'll share pics from the early morning hours here at the Speedway and we can perhaps "liveblog" a little about auto racing here and yon

Snap crackle pop in the hairpin, doesn't bode well for Felipe does it???

Leica X1 shots this morning, something of a departure for me but welcome so I can get this to you as it happens

These shots are straight from the cam, on auto-everything (including vivid image color mode) so don't be on me about color accuracy...I know, I know

I don't use native imaging software on my netbook, rely solely on the cloud and PS.com so all the images are jpg; if there's anything compelling I have the RAW file to work from later at home on my big rig

And look who's dropped in to say 'Hi" it's none other than supermodel Kathy Ireland and no need to say this is a girl who's not camera-shy

Smile for the Leica, Katey

It's always a good day when you can combine a little feminine beauty with some mechanical hardware

Back in Gasoline Alley it's last-minute tech and putting fuel in the cars. You have 137 gallons of fuel-grade ethanol to play with so don't waste any of it

I was just thinking this is where Leica have always excelled, providing reportage from a scene and doing it rapidly, discreetly and with a certain flair

BTW the camera has drawn compliments from the professional photogs I've shown it too; well, they like it very much except for the price....

Mornin' John

Yes, this is a very historic day

Just a moment ago on the closed circuit monitors here trackside we were treated to a look at Jim Clark's winning No. 82 Lotus/Ford which was officially reshod with four true-to-era Firestone tires in a ceremony yesterday

Great stuff here at the Brickyard

As I write this the 1911 winning car, the Marmon Wasp driven by Ray Harroun, has just taken a lap under its own power around the oval

Very hot day here in Indiana

These gentlemen and ladies are The Gordon Pipers, a tradition that began in the postwar years when Tony Hulman invited them to the 500 as a way to build interest in the race

Tony like them so much he kept inviting them back and they are a treat to hear with bass drum booming and those infernal pipes wailing and reverberating around some of the walkways under stands and between buildings here at The Brickyard

F1 over, Vettel wins

Purdue band playing "On the Banks of the Wabash"

This morning is flying by

US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano (left) and Indy Mayor Greg Ballard (right) here to assure us all is well in The Heartland ahead of today's race

Little known fact: there are 2 snipers stationed rooftop here at Indy just in case

Cars have moved from the garages onto the pitlane in the interval since I've been posting here

I normally go down trackside and stay there as the cars actually grid but it's so damned hot I'm probably going to stay inside today

In another 30 minutes you'll be able to see all this on TV anyway so I'm staying put

These folks asked me to let our friends in UK know they are here safe and sound, holding down Brit Corner in the Pagoda Plaza as they have for several years now

I informed them that an American was going to win "our" race this year

They took it well

:D

Better a little heat than a rain delay, I guess. Am really enjoying this thread and wish I were joining you there, Allan. Even know all the words to "Back home again in Indiana." :)

Back online

I ended up going down there anyway

It is Indy, it is one time a year, and you never know where you'll be next year

Here's your front row from Oriol Servia's vantage point:
