tdtaylor Posted May 26, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 26, 2011 There is an old thread that has been updated: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/162965-ms-optical-super-triplet-perar-3-a.html Missed ordering the first time. Already ordered mine several days ago.
MarkP Posted May 27, 2011 Share #3 Posted May 27, 2011 I just ordered mine for my M9 as I also discovered it too late on its earlier production run. Have been communicating with Dirk by email regarding the order, he is most helpful. As I said to him, it will be nice to have a compact option for what is otherwise a non-compact camera. MarkP Posted May 27, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 27, 2011 IMHO, it's a crock. Let's see some large images made with one Hi Pico, is this based on any evidence you can share with us, or just YHO:D of a quirky lens using an arcane optical formula. It's compactness is certainly appealing for times I want the M9 to be very portable, and at the moment I don't have a P&S that will satisfy, having being spoilt by the M9. for what it's worth I'll post some direct comparisons with my current 35 Summilux ASPH at different apertures when I I get the lens. If I like how it 'draws' (for want of a better and less overused word) I'll keep it. If not I'll sell it for a CV 35mm PC (albeit faster but not as compact), or perhaps even get a micro 4/3rds and fit it as a very compact lens:rolleyes: We will see. Ecar Posted May 27, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 27, 2011 IMHO, it's a crock. Let's see some large images made with one Allow me to disagree. While it's certainly not as sharp as my Cron or Lux (not to mention f/3.5), it's a very tiny piece of glass. Nice to have when you don't want to carry heavy and protruding gear (say, crossing railroad tracks on a bicycle;)). More importantly, it's a fun lens to use. Now, whether fun matters as much as absolute image quality is everyone's choice, but I wouldn't call it a crock. I also like the fact that it's made by a passionate artisan. Just MHO, of course... Hi A CV LTM f/3.5 is also small, cheaper and will out perform, try getting one cheap. The Asph f/2.8 is only a bit bigger. There are other small 28mm e.g. Kobalux. MarkP Posted May 27, 2011 Share #8 Posted May 27, 2011 There are some very nice Perar photographs here (I think with the 1st generation lens). Flickriver: Most interesting photos from MS-Optical Super Triplet Perar 35mm f/3.5 Lens pool Mark

There are other small 28mm e.g. Kobalux. Noel Not sure we are talking about the same thing here. The Perar is a 35mm, not 28. Now, there are of course other very small 35mm lenses, both recent and old (CV 35 f/2.5 pancake, Summaron f/3.5 and f/2.8, etc.), all with their respective qualities and flaws. I happen to own and use some of these, as well as a couple of 28mm. I was just making the point that the Perar (a) produces very acceptable images (to my eyes), ( is smaller than any other lens (that I have) and © is fun to use (for me). bill Posted May 27, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 27, 2011 To the best of my knowledge, the smallest 35 for LTM is the 3.5cm Elmar, which can of course be mounted on an M with an adaptor. I have one. It is hardly "state of the art" but it wins on "character" and of course size. Regards, Bill
Anasebi Posted May 27, 2011 Share #11 Posted May 27, 2011 Was interested until the price. Untill I see better evidence of the picture and build quality its just another Japanese niche product at why bother prices.
Ecar Posted May 27, 2011 Share #12 Posted May 27, 2011 To each his own, indeed. This made me smile: Untill I see better evidence of the picture and build quality its just another Japanese niche product at why bother prices. Substitute "German" for "Japanese" and it could be posted in a Leica discussion thread on one of the SonyCanicon forums:)
ezc203 Posted May 27, 2011 Share #13 Posted May 27, 2011 I'm not trying to shit on the lens or people who are interested, but.... I get it's small and whatever, but it's not like the 35mm Cron ASPH is "hunky". Is the ~20mm really that much of a selling point to people? If the lens is quirky / has character, then by all means buy; but when I hear people marvel at how small it is as a major reason to buy, I am honestly baffled. I know I know, "Leica Ms are all about being compact" blah blah blah. But when the camera is 140mmx80mm does the 20 odd millimeter addition to depth really matter THAT much to you? Feel free to shit away, better than being constipated:D (Moderators: do not edit, this is a therapeutic intervention) The images from the Perar in the link I posted above are really quite good (accepting IQ limits on the computer screen, but click on and enlarge them) and the character of the lens looks interesting. It is not a competitor for a standard 35mm lens! I have 21, 35, and 50 Lux's and 28 and 75 Crons, (and an old 50/2.0 Summitar). I don't expect it to 'compete' with these much larger lenses, but it may prove to have it's own interesting 'character'. There is convenience in having a very small lens of reasonable quality that lets me sit the M9 almost FLAT in a pocket or pouch. Beats a P&S. As I said, if it disappoints I'll sell it for a CV 35 PC or put it on a 4/3rds. Regards, Mark

[...] Oh, it's just my skepticism that a cheap lens is elevated to some special status because it is put to a Leica mount. for what it's worth I'll post some direct comparisons with my current 35 Summilux ASPH at different apertures when I I get the lens. That might be quite enlightening. Thank you. Although I have seen a lot of Summilux 35mm ASPH and don't care for its rendering, especially OOF. shard Posted May 27, 2011 Share #19 Posted May 27, 2011 This lens has already gone through one production run of 200 and it got some really good feedback. This is a slightly improved version and I am sure it will sell out even faster than the first batch since there were a lot of potential buyers that procrastinated and missed it. Delfi_r Posted May 27, 2011 Share #20 Posted May 27, 2011 As a happy user of this lens, first run, that's permanently attached to the M8.2 I carry along all time, I would recommend it for all people searching to carry a M on the pocket like the old days and with good results for the casual photographer. Those aiming for high results, a Summarit, will be better but no so compact, and a Summilux ASPH for sure useful in more situations. I own the three and the Summarit it's the less used because it fits between the other two. But only 200+200 units it's not for all people, only for lovers. If you liked the old Rollei 35B, you'll be happy to find this little gem for your M. It delivers more good results that the Triotar versions and it's just a Triplet, light and retractable. The only real drawback it's that you should care with your fingers!
