Leica Maven Posted May 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, My first post, and I'm sorry to say it's a sad one. Somewhere between north New Jersey (near East Hanover) and New Haven, CT my Black Leica M8 was either robbed out of a sealed FedEx parcel, or never put into the parcel. There is a reward for the camera. If you can lead to the successful prosecution of thief/seller, the reward is the camera itself and immunity from prosecution. If you cannot, but wish to claim the reward, send me the camera and I will pay $500 cash, no questions or strings. I want either my camera returned OR the thief brought to justice; I cannot hope to get both. After all, either is good enough for me. As you can tell, I am very serious about resolving the matter. The serial number is 3105250 and it has very very distinctive wear marks from a Luigi case. If you have information, please call me at 773-456-0972, or e-mail me at chicago.camera@yahoo.com. Thank you for your attention and effort!

andybarton Posted May 22, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 22, 2011 I am sorry to hear your tale. This post begs some questions. Do you, or Fedex, not have insurance? If the parcel was sealed, and remained sealed when it arrived with the recipient, how was the camera stolen from the parcel? Was this camera being sent to you, or by you? If the camera was to be found in a second-hand shop, why would the finder need immunity from prosecution? Are you suggesting that someone on the forum has stolen this camera? Leica Maven Posted May 22, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted May 22, 2011 Thanks Andy, I am definitely NOT suggesting that someone on the Forum has stolen the camera. Not at all. This Forum seemed a good place to put the request for info out there. Sorry to have been unclear It's complicated-- yes, insurance but I'd prefer to get the camera back and not have to make a claim. The camera was being returned to me after sale and the parcel appears to have been tampered with (that's a working theory at least). Yes, correct-- at this point it is a civil matter. If someone found it in a resale shop, the shop would have bought stolen goods, not the person who buys from the resale shop. There's no way they could know... There is no prosecution, but if the thief is identified, there certainly could be. Thieves sometimes fence their goods rather than keep them, and in that situation a reader of the Forum might discover something and share the info... There are police reports, and all parties are doing all that anyone in our situation would do. I'm merely alerting the community and requesting information if anyone has it. Oh, and offering a reward. Simple. Thanks for your response!
M. Valdemar Posted May 22, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 22, 2011 You paid for the insurance exactly because this situation might occur. So why don't you want to make a claim? If you want to play Junior FBI Agent or County Sheriff, why did you bother with insurance at all? You can get mixed up with all sorts of problems doing what you are doing. You are taking this too personally. Things happen. It's gone. File your insurance claim and move on.
tobey bilek Posted May 22, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 22, 2011 File a claim and move on unless the camera has sentimental value like it was a wedding present.
spylaw4 Posted May 23, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 23, 2011 Do the obvious! Monitor that auction site and any other major online sale outlet. Notify Solms and as many local dealers as you can of the serial no. in case it has to go for repair or a trade-in. Don't be reluctant - Claim! So you think possibly that the person you bought from took your money and just posted you an empty box? Not sure how you can prove that, if they are saying they sent a camera - sounds like an ebay transaction? The parcel was insured, so as others advise, just make your claim - that's the surest way of avoiding being too much out of pocket. If the camera turns up later on you can offer to repay the insurer and keep the goods. You will also probably find that there is a time limit for notifying losses/making claims, so its best to do that asap. Definately send the details to Leica - if the camera needs repair at any time it will most likely have to go back to them.
jchalmer Posted May 23, 2011 Share #8 Posted May 23, 2011 It sounds like you've just gotten unlucky, mail theft happens all time and the shipping companies(usps etc). they don't usually find the thieves since its so common. It's more likely that someone at usps etc stole it then the camera never getting put in the mail since theft is so common(Ive heard stories during christmas of employees of mail, companies going through christmas cards and stealing grandma's christmas money out of her cards). I would just get the insurance claim since that's whats it's there for. like M. Valdemar says If you want to play Junior FBI Agent or County Sheriff, why did you bother with insurance at all? You can get mixed up with all sorts of problems doing what you are doing. You are taking this too personally. Things happen. It's gone. File your insurance claim and move on. Edit: I know it's rough, but this reminds me of when I sent my laptop to my family across country, and I didn't insure it. The package was lost or stolen(who knows) and usps only refunded me $100 and moved on. If the sender filed a report, it will stand up in court so I'm inclined to believe the sender actually sent it. There's bigger penalities for lying on police reports (jail time, fines, contempt of court etc) than an m8 or even an m9.
