What I mean by action is what I posted earlier in this thread where I wrote kids running around. And I know some people will say of course the M9 can do that but that is only for those who are pro enough to be able to keep up with the MF on the M9.

Well then wouldn't it be nice if you learnt how to use the camera properly :p

I kid. I kid. Please don't be offended.

But honestly, pictures of children running around shouldn't be difficult at all. 35mm f/5.6 gives you a fairly deep depth of field and is fairly forgiving in terms of "how accurate" your focusing is.

If that's not okay for you, then I don't see any other option but a Nikon D3s :p

do you know if a print magazine picture editor would accept 5 megapixel images as technical good enough to print in a magazine? i'm thinking of the output of a digilux 2.

views appreciated.

Im just curious, why not go f8 or f11 for even greater DOF? Why f5.6?

f/5,6 is just usually as small as I'd like to go. Don't use f8 or f11 much, also it just gets too dark no? And your shutter speed will be too low to capture action.

Mr. H - Welcome to the forum, you'll find this a great resource to answer questions such as the one you have. However I do recommend starting another (new) thread as opposed to "hijacking" this one. But to answer you briefly, depending how the images will be used 5MP may or may not be enough. If you start a new thread, I will gladly answer in more detail (as well as more experienced members will be able to give you their opinion)

I've found the D-Lux fine for publication including large cover size in the newspaper. My X1 is currently away being fixed due to sensor error. IQ is very good, but the DL-5 definitely beats it for versatility and speed of use. Very fast reaction time.

Hello, I'm new here and have enjoyed reading.

Apologies for making my first post a question but this caught my eye

Just making the move away from my canon life to the X-1 (early next month)

This is my first Leica.

Would you be kind enough to elaborate on the "sensor error" above.

Thanks

Just tried to edit my post but found out about the 60 min. rule.

Sorry to post again.

I've just stumbled across your previous post regarding the dust spot on the sensor. Something I hadn't considered with a fixed lens.

Hope you had a satisfactory outcome.

Cheers

Made it this time

Ouch, the sensor issue doesn't sound too good.

As above

Hope you had a satisfactory outcome.

Don't worry about "sensor problems", chances are you won't encounter it. As far as I understand, it is quite a rare problem.

The X1 is an outstanding problem (if you can coop with the slow AF), don't worry too much about the problems you read on the forum.

Don't worry, I'm not fixated on problems, just curious. Solved by further reading.

I'm really looking forward to using the X-1, fabulous capability, but as always the

magic lies in the operator. Used SLR's / DSLR's for years and just got tired of the

load. They do a great job, but guess I just crave a return to basic values, simplicity

and transparent technology. Thanks for your reply.

HiltonJoy - Judging by the reasons you've just stated, you will enjoy the X1. Unlike the people who flood the X1 Forum with known (and well discussed) complaints, you seem to know what you are getting yourself into with the X1. I find those people to be the most satisfied with the camera.

Yes, I can understand your comments about the weight carried when out and about with a DSLR. I have a Nikon D90, bought to replace a D50 and, like many, thought that getting bigger and better was the correct thing to do — not so. Buying the D-Lux 5 was a breath of fresh air — light, compact and in many way better than the D90. I wish I'd looked at the X1 when I decided to replace the D50!

Cheers, Macjim.

Just spotted your post and the next one. Sensor error is disappointing, I'll have to wait for it to be fixed. D-Lux 5 has been going strong for about six months and a few thousand shots. Good luck with your X1! I'm convinced the main thing is to enjoy whatever camera you have and make the most of it.

Sure they can use them. They are probably too small for a double-page spread, but most pictures don't need to be that big anyway. It's still nice to have that ability though, so at least 10MP is preferable.

Magazines print at 300dpi. Thing to do is to use a photo editing program (Photoshop, Aperture, Lightroom, etc, I use Graphic Converter) and resize the picture in inches or centimeters. About 8 inches wide for a single page, 16 inches for a DPS. Then change to 300dpi and save a copy. You can quickly tell if it's too large and pixellated.

HiltonJoy: I think you will be very pleased with the X1. I recently purchased one because of the weight issue of DSLRs and I couldn't get decent flesh tones with my Nikon D300 cameras without a lot of PP. The X1 produces impressive IQ even with JPGs. White balance is also very accurate. I'm very satisfied.

You might also expect to get an external viewfinder at some point for outdoor shooting.

Your title is very misleading (the questions you posed are not X1 related at all....)

I don't really thing that comment is correct. This is not a question per say about the X1, it's a question regarding all Leica compacts from the x1 down. It is possible to take action shots with an M9, just rather tricky, and I believe there is a

Photograph who has used the M9 for action shots (can't remember his name!) but the Leica Rangefinder must be capable as why would all the famous photographs of old, use it to report on wars etc. Plenty of action there! It sounds like you are not happy with the Canon 60D, I think I can understand why as Canon has dumbed down that camera when you compare it with the 50D it replaced. The X1 I'd a fine camera but it IS limited due to fixed lens and slow focusing. The D-Lux 5 is a great all rounder and has it's limitations too. All camera's are limited in one way or other: think of a box brownie: but there are always ways around those limitations. I, for one, would happily have the M9 as my main camera (if I could afford it!) and keep the D-Lux 5 as a camera for backing up or use when the M9 was left at home. At the end of the day, it will depend on you, the use, on whether you jell with the camera of choice. Its a lot of money to spend especially if you find you don't like it: the X1 could be that camera: and I've Been in the same situation when in bought my Nikon D90. A great camera but with hind sight I would have bought the X1. At the end of the day just enjoy the camera of choice and learn how to get the best out of it as there's always a way to take the photographs you're after. Enjoy!

Cheers, Macjim.
