Beyder28 Posted May 17, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted May 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I wanted to hear some people's opinions on the other compacts offered by Leica. Which ones do you guys use? What do you like and dislike about them? I am thinking about just buying an M9 and using that as my primary camera and have the Vlux2 (since its technically a DSLR) replace my Canon 60D to be able to shoot action and some other things that the M9 is not good for. Is this a dumb idea? I am sure the Canon 60D is a better all around DSLR but I have a feeling that most of the bells and whistles I wont be using in the long run and it may be over kill since I really wont be shooting sports but just hyper toddlers when it comes to shooting action. It would be nice to have the option of shooting some macro but not on a high level pro scale. What are your thoughts? Would a Vlux 2 suit these needs with great image quality and auto focus? Advertisement Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Hi Beyder28, Take a look here X1 and Other Leica Compacts. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
JeTexas Posted May 17, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted May 17, 2011 I would look at some Vlux2 images before deciding that's what you want to do. It's a good camera and very versatile, but it still has a much smaller sensor than a DSLR and it actually isn't much smaller or cheaper than a DSLR. Solar B Posted May 17, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted May 17, 2011 I may be missing something here but you appear to be asking a lot of questions about the V-lux2 and M9 and none about the X1 ? Â For opinions on the V-lux2 i would direct you to the Digital camera forum and for those on the M9 ... the M9 forum . Â Brian

the vlux2 may be "technically a DSLR" but it is one w/o interchangeable lenses- you do know that. and that the Panasonic version will be less expensive. If you shoot in RAW the Leica jpg engine is not important.  I do not own nor have I shoot a vlux2 so I cannot respond to your other queries.
wda Posted May 17, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted May 17, 2011 It is difficult to advise you without knowing your primary photographic interests. A compact will seldom match a DSLR for versatility or quality. A compact is a compromise and I find the X1 excellent for what it claims to be. The M9 would always be my first camera of choice. As far as I am aware the V-Lux 2 does not have a mirror (for viewing the image) which swings out of the way when an exposure takes place, it has an electronic viewfinder (EVF). So its not "technically a DSLR". By the same token an X1 or the Fuji X100 are not rangefinder cameras as neither have rangefinders, unlike the M9. Sorry to be so picky but I think we're losing some basic principles of photography
mjh Posted May 17, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted May 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The V-Lux 2 is not a DSLR, much less technically. The V-Lux 2 could be described as a bridge camera.
Beyder28 Posted May 17, 2011 Author Share #8 Â Posted May 17, 2011 Thank you guys for setting me straight. I did read a very insightful article by Thorsten Overgaard who uses the Digilux 2 still today for some of his professional work. What are some thoughts on that camera? The point for me in this thread is to have two cameras. One definitely being an M9 and the other (preferably staying with Leica) to compensate in the areas that M9 is weak in. I would rather the second camera not be the most powerful choice for the action and macro shots but be a Leica if that makes any sense.
macjim Posted May 17, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted May 17, 2011 I would have said that the companion the the M9 would be the D-Lux 5! it's a nice all round camera with its 24-90 mm lens, and the video ability too.

earleygallery Posted May 17, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted May 17, 2011 Buy the M9 and keep your Canon for the Macro and tele/action stuff. The M9 is a compact camera compared to the Canon, they will complement each other and you can fit R lenses to your Canon if you want to.
ezc203 Posted May 18, 2011 Share #12  Posted May 18, 2011 Your title is very misleading (the questions you posed are not X1 related at all....) Anyhow...  These are the "facts" I've gathered:  1. M9 + another camera  2. You want the cameras to supplement each other as opposed to compliment  3. You like action shots (you really ought to clarify what ACTION you're referring to)  4. You have a 60D  -  Get the M9 for sure. Great camera. And splurge on lenses.  The M9 with a healthy amount of practice will be able to handle a good amount of action shots. I've shot an NBA basketball game with an M8 and 90 Cron with what I would consider "superb" results.  That said, I agree a Leica M is not the best for action. A camera that will be the most different from the M9 and do things the M9 won't do will be a DSLR. No replacement. If you're not concerned with size (which is what it sounds like, in reference to your reaction to the D LUX 5 suggestion) I'd say stay with the Canon and get 15-35mm f/2.8 and 70-200 f4. That'll do everything the M9 can't do.
macjim Posted May 18, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted May 18, 2011 Would you say that just because it is compact? Or because it can actually shoot action better than the M9? Â Oh, because it's compact. There's no way it's better than an M9!
NZDavid Posted May 18, 2011 Share #14 Â Posted May 18, 2011 Another vote for D-Lux 5 as a compact. It's a cracker. 24-90 and fast f/2 at the wide end makes it useful for most stuff, and IQ is excellent. The M9 should be brilliant.
Beyder28 Posted May 18, 2011 Author Share #15 Â Posted May 18, 2011 So I realize that The Canon can do the things that the M9 cant and my main point was to stick with the Leica brand. Can the Dlux 5 perform close to DSLR results for action shots (mostly kids running around)? The X1 is what I have now and I just dont think that I would need it along with the M9. So the reason for this thread title was to figure out if I should even keep the X1 or instead opt for another Leica that will supplement the things that the M9 is not so good on. wda Posted May 18, 2011 Share #16 Â Posted May 18, 2011 It depends on your desired end product. IQ is decidedly better with the M9 and X1 because of larger sensor sizes. Â As I have written elsewhere, I often use my X1 to complement my M8/9 and find it very effective. For personal pictures of family etc, almost any Leica would serve you well and the D-Lux 5 has much merit for this role. But its results will be outclassed by the other two cameras if big enlargements or stock photography is a goal.
NZDavid Posted May 18, 2011 Share #17 Â Posted May 18, 2011 I've found the D-Lux fine for publication including large cover size in the newspaper. My X1 is currently away being fixed due to sensor error. IQ is very good, but the DL-5 definitely beats it for versatility and speed of use. Very fast reaction time. prk60091 Posted May 19, 2011 Share #18 Â Posted May 19, 2011 I have a 16 x 20 hanging taken with a dlux4 hanging in my house and it looks "spectacular" per my wife
Beyder28 Posted May 19, 2011 Author Share #19 Â Posted May 19, 2011 Will the Dlux 5 shoot action well? If so, then there is no need for me to keep the X1 since it is not good with action just like the M9 is not good with action. As far as large prints are concerned, I am not planning to print anything larger than 8X11.5 with the Dlux 5. I just want a supplement camera (that is a Leica) to be able to have fast AF for action shots which is something M9 does not have. Im sure the X1 will produce better, higher res. pics at larger sizes but it still cant shoot action very well. I'd rather have a clean smaller print size than a larger one with blur. ezc203 Posted May 19, 2011 Share #20 Â Posted May 19, 2011 I really urge you to define what you mean by "action", because I really don't believe the "M9 is not good with action"...
