wide for M9

I am now considering to get a wide lens for my M9, I need this for landscape, architecture and sometimes indoor. As both 21 lux and 24 lux cost nearly 5000€, and I do not use wide lens so often, they are out of my option. So I am now looking at 21 Elmarit, 24 Elmarit, and also the equivalent from zeiss Biogon. Although the price from Zeiss are really tempting, I find the size from both lens a bit too big for my taste.

My lens combo now: 35+50

Which one would you choose?

Is a external VR necessary for the 24mm lens?

The Zeiss biogon 21 2.8 is not really large at all. Have you used one? I find it a nice size, just right really. Also, it is beautifully made, and if you like the traditional Zeiss qualities, it has them in spades.

I find its nice to have a Zeiss lens in amongst the Leica's too, for when I want a slightly different feel. I think the biogon's a wonderful little lens, and it now gets used far more often than I expected when I bought it.

Let me second that. I have a 21 'lux, but also own a 21/2.8 Biogon. The 'lux is an amazing lens, but it's huge and heavy, not to mention expensive enough to make me live in mortal fear of damaging it . If I'm sure I'm likely to be shooting stopped down a bit or I want to travel light but with the option to go extra wide, I bring the Biogon.

The 21mm/2.8 Biogon is an amazing performer in a very small package. Only downside I've found is somewhat pronounced coma wide open (thought not as much as the 35mm/2.0 Biogon)

I have an M8 not an M9, but the 24mm Elmarit is a stellar performer.

Yes, you'll need the external viewfinder on the M9.

I have the biogon 21mm and it is a great lens in a small package. If it were to be a centerpiece lens perhaps I would've bought a leica. Or perhaps not. For the amount of time if is on my camera it is perfect in quality and price

I have one, but hardly ever use it. I had it for my 24 and 21 on the M6 and yes, needed.

With the M9 I shoot and control the picture on the screen.

Over time you can get a feel for it. The viewfinder gives it a very different feel and on a tripod it is useful. Free hand I don't like to move between checking the exposure and the external VF. With the internal exposure meter you need to move around to test the exposure time anyway.

I hope it helps

Cheers and good luck on the savings for the 21 lux. Heavy but don't want to miss it ....

If you want Landscapes: Zeiss biogon 4,5 /21mm a marvelous lens. Smaller than 2,8 and a slightly better performer.

As for the Leica : the Elmarit-M 2,8 /24mm asph is one of the best.!! ( For nice secondhand prices too )

Only problem with the Zeiss biogon 4,5 ) is the coloring at the sides. The lens simply is to short at the moment. ( maybe it will get better with the M9 firmware update )

Get a second hand Tri-Elmar 16/18/21.

Wonderful lens and very versatile. Surprisingly light and compact too.

I have given up using my 18, 21 and 24's since I picked up an 'as new' one at a very good price.

I use it with my 18mm brightline finder rather than the supplied monstrosity..... the M8 framelines equate to 21mm and the full finder view just about to 16mm (and of course there are the 18mm frame lines).

f4 isn't an issue when you can easily handhold down to 1/6 sec on an M9 with this lens.....

I use a 18 Super Elmar on the M8, so approx 24mm in full frame M9.

If your looking for a more cheap wide angle for the M9 I would take a look at the 24mm f/3.8 elmar. Stellar performer, good price and not to big.

As for the finder, at the beginning I didn't use a viewfinder and just tried to look closer into the finder. It worked okey but when I later I bought a external finder I was really pleased with it. Because the relative slow speed of the lens, the wide angle and of course the focusknob its really easy to focus by feel. I keep my eye by the external finder and guess the focus by the position of the knob. Work fine.
