Cannot open photos from iPhoto 11 (9.1.3) to edit in PS CS5

There are a few threads on this on the Apple Discussion Forum on this subject. Like those posters, I cannot open any images I have added recently to iPhoto, since upgrading to I think 9.1.1 (iPhoto 11), in order to edit them in PS CS5. I have done all the usual Mac First Aid of rebuilding the library both with iPhoto and iPhoto Library Manger, repairing file permissions, verifying the main HD. The same images open properly in CS5, if I go to the iPhoto Library in Finder, drill down to the originals folder and open direct, so it looks like an iPhoto issue. I get the message below, which does not make sense, as it is a 16 bit TIFF I am trying to open. Images I added to iPhoto (also 16 bit TIFFs) before the upgrade, open in CS5 with no problems. I have tried creating a new library in iPhoto Library Manager and dragging one of the problem events into the new library. The images still would not open in CS5. This is consistent on both my iMac and MBP. Any suggestions?

Update. I have again created a brand new empty library from scratch. Then imported a few new TIFF's to the new library from finder, not from a previous library or event. These still will not open in CS5 from iPhoto but will from finder, so it is not a library corruption issue. This looks like a Apple bug. BTW I am using CS5 12.0.4. I will report this wearing my Apple Developer hat.

Further update from TD at Apple. Apple have decided that if you use iPhoto 11 as a managed rather than referenced library for TIFF images (most people do, including me, as if you are not using it to manage image locations, then what is the point) then from now on, it will only send TIFF's out to edit in a weird form of JPEG that Photoshop cannot read. I am guessing this is deliberate and all part of Apple's continuing battle with Adobe. If this is the case, it is a dreadful thing to do to customers. TD says that lots of folks are very angry about this and reporting it as a bug to Apple. I suppose it means I will have to go over to using Media Pro from Phase One. At least there if something doesn't work, I can pick up the phone and speak to Jakub.

Apple's media management is really bad. It does not lend it's self to allow you to work outside their products. I am now migrating all my dng files to an external drive, and plan to just import what I need for a particular project. So I too am looking at Media Pro.

I am talking right now to Phase One to see if it is possible to bring in the Event name as a field on each image imported from the iPhoto library. MP does not of course, actually import the photo, it just imports a tag to its location. As usual Phase One right on the ball and immediately saw what I was looking for. I think I have tracked down that the Event name and data is stored in a file called AlbumData2.xml and have sent a copy of this to Phase One for a small library. MP does import the Event Date, so I hope not too difficult to link that to an Event name. There is already a field for it in MP, it is just not active at the moment.

It may be that I am lazy but storing things in Events in iPhoto is terribly convenient and makes finding a photo from up to 12+ years ago very easy. I started digital with a Leica Digilux Zoom in 1999 plus I have very gradually been scanning in old slides. My libraries are backed every day to a RAID array and DNG's are all stored separately with a copy offsite, so I don't think I can ever lose an image now.

My house in France gets affected by nearby lightning strikes about once every 2 years. In 2006, I was running a back up from my iBook to a non-RAID HD and at the same time sending a fax. The phone line got hit and killed my iBook plus the back up disk. I now therefore keep multiple back ups and have a lot more anti-lightning protection (2 or 3 layers on every wire entering the house, including satellite aerial cable). I also unplug phone lines at the first rumble in the distance.

It would be nice if Apple were as responsive as Phase One. Apparently Apple have been aware of this issue for about 2 months now and nothing has been done or said. It was not deliberate and is just a mistake in programming.

That would be wonderful if MP could import the iPhoto/Aperture libraries directly. That would certainly make my life much easier. Lyn (a photo viewer) has started down that path, but cannot read DNG files, it only reads the preview.
