likalar Posted May 13, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 13, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The old rigid section of the bridge, to the left, is unsafe in earthquakes, and will be removed. A new, more flexible suspension span is being built to partially replace the rigid sections, The modern suspension tower is nearly complete (the steel construction supports surrounding it will be removed in time). Huge cables will eventually be strung from the top of the tower to support the roadway below. The light colored roadway is temporarily being supported by the busy steel structure that will be removed after the huge cables are properly tuned. The numerous white protrusions alongside the roadway will eventually support the pedestrian/bicycle path that will thoughtfully allow access 1/2 way across the entire bridge. Odd, but here's why: The original Bay Bridge suspension span (not shown here), west of Treasure Island, will remain in use for vehicular traffic, but has no provision for walking or pedaling. At best, pedestrians and cyclists will be making half a crossing. Larry
