Guest douglasf13 Posted May 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi. I came up with an EVF solution for my NEX-5 a couple of months ago, which I've been sharing with others on various forums, and it hit me today that maybe this could be useful for my X1 friends. Essentially, it is combining the ideas of the Clearviewer and foldable LCD hoods into one unit. What you're left with is a Hasselblad sized, EVF equivalent that works surprisingly well. The only real issues is that there is some barrel distortion, but it doesn't bother me a great deal. Of course, one would have to use a different LCD hood for the X1, since the one I used is NEX specific, but maybe this will at least spur on some ideas. See this thread: Check out my NEX-5 EVF... - FM Forums

lykaman Posted May 14, 2011 Share #3 Posted May 14, 2011 Hi, great idea but I think it defeats the “pocketable” and the certainly the line of the -- X1
Guest douglasf13 Posted May 14, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 14, 2011 I guess, but it really doesn't add much noticeable bulk when folded up. Even when I have a pancake lens mounted, it doesn't change which pockets I can put the camera in.
lykaman Posted May 14, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 14, 2011 (1) I admire your inventiveness (2) where the images taken with a Leica? This is a Leica specific Forum (3) Rather than calling it EVF i would think that "Monitor Magnifier & Focus Aid" is somewhat more appropriate! andybarton Posted May 14, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 14, 2011 It doesn't matter if the photos were not taken with a Leica for shots like these.
maddog333 Posted May 14, 2011 Share #7 Posted May 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Still, the quality of LCD is one of the weakest links for X1, amplification might just show the pixel not picture. Maybe someday the X2 will equip with ultra high resolution Retina screen, by then the idea could be more attractive.
Guest douglasf13 Posted May 14, 2011 Share #8 Posted May 14, 2011 Ah, I had not considered the resolution differences between these two cameras. That may certainly be an issue. As far as LCD vs. EVF, we're talking about semantics, I guess. Outside of a little distortion, this magnified version of the LCD is actually higher quality than EVF tech is currently. It's like having a Hasselblad-sized viewfinder on the camera. A bunch of NEX users are beginning to use this with great success, so I thought I'd pass on the info (I have no business relationship with any of this.). It certainly makes the camera less bulky than adding on an OVF or EVF to the hotshoe, as far as packability is concerned.
lykaman Posted May 14, 2011 Share #9 Posted May 14, 2011 Joking aside, it’s great.
Guest douglasf13 Posted May 14, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 14, 2011 Oh yeah, if anyone does happen to be interested in this idea, I wanted to mention that you do get a view of the entire LCD screen, not just a portion of it. It's kind of like a giant, IMAX viewing screen.
pico Posted September 17, 2011 Share #11 Posted September 17, 2011 I LOVE this stuff! Simple, elegant, compact, ingenious. Just for the heck of it, I think I'll try a Hasselblad straight finder on a G1 for macro work (and 25mm F/.95 lens). Thanks for that! ...now, back to my 75mm Summilux challenge. tom0511 Posted September 17, 2011 Share #12 Posted September 17, 2011 Sorry-even if I would not like to have this magnifier on my X1 I find it an interesting idea for those who are looking for this. If people of R&D departments would be as negative as those people here in the forum we would still just walk and not drive and we would still paint on stones instead of having photography. pop Posted September 17, 2011 Share #13 Posted September 17, 2011 If people of R&D departments would be as negative as those people here in the forum we would still just walk What makes you think that people here are negative? While the OP's idea has its merits, it's not all that new. Google, for instance, for Hoodman. I don't drive, BTW.
andybarton Posted September 17, 2011 Share #14 Posted September 17, 2011 Why DO spammers always choose to pick on very old threads? I have never understood that. This thread basically died about 4 months ago only to be resurrected by a spammer (since removed)
