imported_reinierv Posted May 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I have been without Leica's for quite some time now, since I sold the M8 because I think it is unreliable and leica customer service sucks. Now I do love my D700, it is the first camera I feel totally free with on assigments and I use it 85% of the time. But then there are these situations I prefer a more compact camera. Like in the mountains, in the backpack or when taking more stealthy pictures, when I need to fit into the crowd so to say. I now have this PEN P1, which basically is acceptable in image quality but my god, the controls are a total horror. There is a ghost in that thing that changes the settings randomly I believe. Then unexpectedly I got an X1 in my hand...that is a totally different feeling. The guy asked me to explain the controls and it was easy. To bad it is just limitted in its focal length and an M9 is not affordable for me...just to bad....would love to have a Leica again.
Advertisement Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Hi imported_reinierv, Take a look here Yes I admit, I miss it. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted May 12, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 12, 2011 I finally got to handle an X1 two weeks ago. The owner (a member of this Forum who also has an M8) installed the thumb rest that looks like a film advance lever. That addition makes it very easy to hold and control, and I was impressed with the camera's quality and performance. I too would like to see the next version have other focal lengths; ideally a zoom lens of the quality of the D2's lens.
Xmas Posted May 12, 2011 Share #3 Posted May 12, 2011 Hi What you need is a shooter M2 with a beaten up 35mm CV lens stuffed in spare corner of gbag. Noel
imported_reinierv Posted May 12, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted May 12, 2011 Hi What you need is a shooter M2 with a beaten up 35mm CV lens stuffed in spare corner of gbag. Noel Well, I have a zorki C with a jupiter (I believe) 28mm on it, is that also ok?
leicanut2 Posted May 12, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 12, 2011 The X1 has a zoom, run backward and forward. I would like a small zoom like the DL-5 has. Cheers Jan
Xmas Posted May 12, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 12, 2011 Well, I have a zorki C with a jupiter (I believe) 28mm on it, is that also ok? Hi Not the same fondle-ability, the 28mm may be an Orion-15 f/6? An M2 would stop any M8 or M9 lust. I spilt a half pint of beer on mine last weekend and I was only worried about the loss of beer. Noel
Jeff S Posted May 12, 2011 Share #7 Posted May 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Buy a mint M8.2 for half the price of an M9 and enjoy. I have two that have performed flawlessly. And you can get chrome, sapphire screen, and a black dot (on the black version), which you can't get with a current stock M9. Jeff

Jeff S Posted May 12, 2011 Share #9 Posted May 12, 2011 Hi Jeff All you say is true, but did you read the 1st sentence of post #1? Or have you tried pouring beer over a M8? Noel Of course I read it. And I recommended an M8.2 because it's more reliable than an M8, and I've had no need to have Leica service deal with any significant issues. Not sure what you mean about the beer. What am I missing, Noel? Jeff
adan Posted May 12, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 12, 2011 I suspect Xmas is talking about water/weather/beer-proofing. Depends on the proof of the beer, of course. Somehow in 40 years of photography I've managed not to spill beer on my cameras. I did get my M8 splashed with high-velocity whitewash and it kept working just fine.... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/96090-m8-seems-paint-resistant.html
Xmas Posted May 12, 2011 Share #11 Posted May 12, 2011 Hi Jeff Thanks for that I did not realise the M8-2 was more reliable. Water ingress for a M8 can be terminal, beer probably worse, I managed beer last Saturday by accident on my M2, no detectable bad effects, yet. Several semi pros I know have gotten out of M8s for the maintenance cost exposure, staying with Nikon or Canon. Noel P.S. Andy posted while I was typng, I was drinking beer with one hand in street market and taking candits with the other, until I was jousled, bad I know, and it was Friday not Saturday. Jeff S Posted May 12, 2011 Share #12 Posted May 12, 2011 Gotcha, Andy and Noel. I've spilled beer on me, but not the camera...yet. Not sure about beer, but I've heard good and bad stories about non-fully weather sealed cameras in the rain and snow (including 5Ds and D700s). I'll take my M8.2 out for a bit, but no prolonged use in really wet weather. That's one feature I would really like to have, but it wouldn't do any good without compatible sealed lenses. I have considered an alternate sealed camera for just that purpose. Didn't have this concern with my film Ms. Jeff
jamesk8752 Posted May 13, 2011 Share #13 Posted May 13, 2011 (snip) Then unexpectedly I got an X1 in my hand...that is a totally different feeling. The guy asked me to explain the controls and it was easy. To bad it is just limitted in its focal length and an M9 is not affordable for me...just to bad....would love to have a Leica again. Is it heresy to suggest that you might consider a Ricoh GXR with the A12 28mm and 50mm modules? Not a Leica, to be sure, but very well made and quite usable as a carry-everywhere. A module which will accept M-lenses is due in the fall... Regards, Jim
imported_reinierv Posted May 13, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted May 13, 2011 No, I'm fully digital now, now more film fuzz for this guy except very occasionally And that Ricoh, I had the 100, thought it was bad, The PEN does it's job btw, just the user interface is horrible but I got used to it
