imported_reinierv Posted May 12, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted May 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I have been without Leica's for quite some time now, since I sold the M8 because I think it is unreliable and leica customer service sucks. Â Now I do love my D700, it is the first camera I feel totally free with on assigments and I use it 85% of the time. But then there are these situations I prefer a more compact camera. Like in the mountains, in the backpack or when taking more stealthy pictures, when I need to fit into the crowd so to say. I now have this PEN P1, which basically is acceptable in image quality but my god, the controls are a total horror. There is a ghost in that thing that changes the settings randomly I believe. Â Then unexpectedly I got an X1 in my hand...that is a totally different feeling. The guy asked me to explain the controls and it was easy. To bad it is just limitted in its focal length and an M9 is not affordable for me...just to bad....would love to have a Leica again. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The owner (a member of this Forum who also has an M8) installed the thumb rest that looks like a film advance lever. That addition makes it very easy to hold and control, and I was impressed with the camera's quality and performance. Hi  Not the same fondle-ability, the 28mm may be an Orion-15 f/6? An M2 would stop any M8 or M9 lust. And I recommended an M8.2 because it's more reliable than an M8, and I've had no need to have Leica service deal with any significant issues.  Not sure what you mean about the beer. Â Somehow in 40 years of photography I've managed not to spill beer on my cameras. Xmas Posted May 12, 2011 Share #11  Posted May 12, 2011 Hi Jeff  Thanks for that I did not realise the M8-2 was more reliable.  Water ingress for a M8 can be terminal, beer probably worse, I managed beer last Saturday by accident on my M2, no detectable bad effects, yet.  Several semi pros I know have gotten out of M8s for the maintenance cost exposure, staying with Nikon or Canon.  Noel P.S. Andy posted while I was typng, I was drinking beer with one hand in street market and taking candits with the other, until I was jousled, bad I know, and it was Friday not Saturday. Â Not sure about beer, but I've heard good and bad stories about non-fully weather sealed cameras in the rain and snow (including 5Ds and D700s). I'll take my M8.2 out for a bit, but no prolonged use in really wet weather. That's one feature I would really like to have, but it wouldn't do any good without compatible sealed lenses. Â Is it heresy to suggest that you might consider a Ricoh GXR with the A12 28mm and 50mm modules? Not a Leica, to be sure, but very well made and quite usable as a carry-everywhere.
