IkarusJohn Posted May 8, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just noticed my 21 Lux has a small dent (more like a crease) in the barrel, just between the aperture ring and the lens hood screw, so it's between the front element and the next group. It's about 3 mm long, and half a mm deep at most - hasn't gone through the paint or anything. While this is annoying (lack of care - I have no idea how I did this, but presumably it was banging the bag against something), should I get it looked at. Peering through the front element, predictably, I can't see anything. I haven't noticed any impact on my photos, but then how would I see anything? I'm tempted to send it back to Solms, for peace of mind, if nothing else. Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers John

ho_co Posted May 9, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 9, 2011 If you can't see any problems in the pictures, I wouldn't send it in. It's probably just cosmetic damage. Leica lenses are built tough.
menos I M6 Posted May 9, 2011 Share #3 Posted May 9, 2011 Check, if there is any issue in operation of the mechanics (not just image quality, but feel of focussing, aperture, etc.). Also remove the lens hood and feel, if the hood can be removed and remounted within its threads without issues. Check the lens from both sides with a light source, inspecting the visible inside barrel, if anything suspicious can be seen (doubtful). If everything feels fine, you have no problems and just continue to shoot. On the next really necessary checkup (helicoid grease, real damage, etc …), have a specialist look after this damage as well and ask for the opinion. Until then, just shoot and enjoy the lens (writing with slight jealousy of course ;-) ).
NB23 Posted May 9, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 9, 2011 You should see mine! I dented it on the same place you describe on the first day I owned the lens. And the hood is all torn. After heavy use, the look of my 21 Lux' wear has stabilized but it got that abused look very fast. I wasn't very happy with Leica's finish Quality for that lens that's for sure. But the images are extremely fine, EXTREMELY fine with that unique Leica look so I decided not to get nervous about some scratches on the metal. I'm curious to know, though, if Leica will change the metal parts to new ones and how much?
jaapv Posted May 9, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 9, 2011 Interesting, the 21 and 24 are supposed to be very similar, but it seems they differ in this respect. On my 24 the hood is severely worn, I dropped the lens once from 1 m onto pavement ( Leica had to redjust it then) but the lens itself shows virtually no signs of use. tdtaylor Posted May 9, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 9, 2011 I've had a good size dent in the side of my MATE for a long time, but it has never affected the performance. I did inquire with NJ about having the part replaces, and while I didn't get a price (had to send it in), they were fairly certain that the parts were available through Solms. I may still do it, but have been trying to figure a time I would let it go to service for a while.
IkarusJohn Posted May 19, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted May 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I couldn't bear it - only a small dent, but the lens is new and cost a bomb. I've sent it back to Solms. If it costs too much, I'll claim it in insurance. Dumbass.
AGeoJO Posted May 19, 2011 Share #8 Posted May 19, 2011 It is one of those battle scars; while I would find it annoying as well but I would think after a while you would get used to it.
