sortapundit Posted May 7, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted May 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) First, apologies for not Googling this more thoroughly before posting here. I'm sure I could find my answer with enough digging, but as I've spent the last two days in the air - along with ten hours in a Chinese jail and a lovely hour being deported from Mongolia () - my brain isn't quite up to the task. I hope you'll humour me and not force me to learn how to use this damned Mac. Thank you. Â Last week I sold an Elmar 9cm f/4 to raise a little cash towards a nice little collection of Leica gear. The buyer, an M3 owner, just messaged me to tell me he's returning it as he can't seem to focus the lens on his body. So the simple question is: are rangefinder lenses compatible with the M3 body while retaining infinity focus? If not,is an adaptor available that would allow them to work properly? I'm hoping so, as I've spent more money on plane tickets in the last two days than I can safely think about without resorting to faking my own death. Having to refund money for this guy because he didn't do his research is the last thing I need. Â Thanks all

stunsworth Posted May 7, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted May 7, 2011 ...are rangefinder lenses compatible with the M3 body while retaining infinity focus? Â Not sure what you mean by a rangefinder lens, but a 90mm Elmar in M mount is compatible with an M3, and a 90mm Elmar in screw mount is compatible provided you use an appropriate screw to M adaptor. Â Assuming that both the camera and lens are working as designed of course.
spydrxx Posted May 8, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted May 8, 2011 Sure they are. If it was a collapsible model, one needs to fully extend it and twist the lens barrel to lock it in place, then it will focus to infinity.
sortapundit Posted May 8, 2011 Author Share #4 Â Posted May 8, 2011 Cheers guys Hmmm, not sure what the issue is here, then. The lens is the non-collapsible 1950 chrome version in a screw mount. I also supplied an M Mount adaptor, which might be the problem if it isn't the correct thickness. Damn it, I wish I had a real PC here so I could do a little research. How the hell do people use these Apple toy computers?
andybarton Posted May 8, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted May 8, 2011 I'd like to know how people use PCs... Let's not go there... Â Did this lens and mount work on your own camera?

earleygallery Posted May 9, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted May 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I suspect the problem lies with the purchaser, either he can't focus or his rangefinder is out of alignment. Â Focus is of course more critical with the 9cm lens especially used at f4. Adaptors are all the same, I used various ones Leica and 3rd party cheapo versions and they've all worked fine. sortapundit Posted May 9, 2011 Author Share #8 Â Posted May 9, 2011 Erm, well, the internet is the internet, no matter if you're on a Mac, PC or Linux machine. Â True The problem is I have no jeffing clue how to do anything on this thing It took me half an hour to open a new browser tab, and when I tried to do the Mac equivalent of a right click (yeah, Jobs, two mouse buttons are faaaar too complicated) I somehow deleted the address bar from Safari. Huge pain in the ass. Â Yeah, still can't figure out what's the problem. The optical block on the Elmar is fixed, and it worked fine the day I posted it. Hmmmm. Oh well, I'll just take it back and resell it to someone who can figure it out

Huge pain in the ass. Â You must be using a laptop Mac - all the desktops have had two mice buttons for years (three if you count the center button). As for actually using the software, have you ever taken a look at the Help menu? You'd be surprised how much easier it makes operating an unfamiliar computer... andybarton Posted May 10, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted May 10, 2011 How do you open a new tab on Internet Exploder? CTRL-T. Cmd-T does the sane thing on a Mac. Â Just because you're unfamiliar with it, doesn't make it rubbish or a toy.
edmond_terakopian Posted May 10, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted May 10, 2011 ...also in System Preferences you can set your trackpad for doing a right click - just check it out. Â Edmond

Many of the shortcuts are similar except you use the cmd key rather than the ctrl key. There is nothing wrong with the car, it's the nut behind the wheel.
