missmarvell Posted May 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was contemplating if I should get an external flash for my D-lux 5. What is it usually for? And which ones would recommend? Also any suggestions for a tripod?

macjim Posted May 7, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 7, 2011 What would you use it for and Cheers, Macjim.
macjim Posted May 7, 2011 Share #3 Posted May 7, 2011 Ahem… as I was saying, what would you use it for? Do you really need a flash? Have you tried to photograph with the available light? I would give it a try without using a Flash, internal or external and see how you get on as the D-Lux 5 is great used flash free! I've used it at night with only the street lighting as a light source and it's excellent. It'd not a cheap item to buy and an expensive one if you ended up giving it little use. Cheers, Macjim. lykaman Posted May 7, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 7, 2011 Hi, tripods info:- Camera Tripod Reviews - The Digital Camera Experts Flash units get a Leica, they look good & work even better.. Fill Flash enjoy your DL5.......
macjim Posted May 7, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 7, 2011 One tripod you could look at is the Gorrilapod http://joby.com/gorillapod/slr/features/ Which can be used to steady the camera in many ways. But it's no use if you want a free standing tripod from the ground to eye level height Cheers, Macjim.
wda Posted May 7, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 7, 2011 Try using the in-built flash, in a controlled way, as fill-in light; either indoors or outside. Progress further depending on your analysis of results.

macjim Posted May 11, 2011 Share #8 Posted May 11, 2011 Simply, switch it on and point at whatever you're shooting and take the shot with the flash closed — that's your available light. It's not a setting it's just the light from the sky, street lights or any other light source which is available to illuminate your subject. I shoot in RAW mode and with aperture priority and the camera adjust the speed, iso etc to get the best quality it can. Usually that is good as it's an intelligent camera resulting in some nice images, but you can experiment with it to see how well it works though, but if you get a low light warning — usually a red flashing symbol — then you will have to think about popping up the flash or propping yourself and the camera against something to steady up. Make sure the image stabilization is switched to help in low light — you can leave it on all the time — it should make much difference to the battery performance. Hope that helps, regards

macjim Posted May 23, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 23, 2011 im sorry to join in your thread.. im a new leica user, i just bought dlux-5, and i shoot in raw, but it wont show up at my lightroom 3 and photoshop cs 3 camera raw... could some one help me???/ Don't be sorry, welcome! Have you updated Lightroom? You'll find that plugging the D-Lux 5 doesn't show up when directly plugged in via USB, or at least, that is my experience so I suggest you use a card reader and see if that works for you. If you've got the most recent macs then the SD card reader should be built in. Let us know how you get on.
ho_co Posted May 23, 2011 Share #11 Posted May 23, 2011 Welcome to the forum! Photoshop CS 3 may not support the .RWL format. Just repeating the previous post: Update to the latest version of ACR compatible with the version of Photoshop that you've got, and update to the latest version of LR3. It may be that only LR3 will support the D-Lux 5's raw files, and not your older Photoshop. To get around that, you could use the free DNG converter from Adobe, though the DNG's that will be compatible with PS3 will be de-mosaicked and very large. Let us know how you get on, and exactly what you see. Are you on Mac or Windows?
farnz Posted May 23, 2011 Share #12 Posted May 23, 2011 ... Photoshop CS 3 may not support the .RWL format. ... Howard, you're spot on. CS3 doesn't support the D-Lux 5's .RWL raw format. I use the free to download Adobe DNG Convertor and CS3 reads the DNGs without a problem. Pete.
ezc203 Posted May 24, 2011 Share #13 Posted May 24, 2011 I use an SF 24D on my M8/CLE/MP with fantastic results. Especially the film ones, have this really interest aesthetic that I love for "party pictures". But if you have to ask "What is it usually for" then I don't recommend it. If you don't NEED a flash, don't buy a flash. I think the built-in flash on the D LUX 5 will be sufficient for most scenarios.

jjonsalt Posted May 28, 2011 Share #15 Posted May 28, 2011 Gorrilapod? My advice is only chance using one with a camera that costs less than the pod does. No way I use one with a camera I care about. I carry a Leica Tabletop Tripod fitted with a Giotto 1104 ball head. One can even hold it against a vertical surface to use. I often use flash for fill, indoors and out. And usually an external one.
