I have a few old school lenses that I have been working on and they don't justify sending off for a real CLA. Does anyone have a recommendation for the type of grease that would be suitable for Leica M lenses? Does anyone know what is used at the factory?

I have heard that Micro Tools has the right stuff, but wanted to ask here first. Washington might know....

Thank you,

George

Before this gets moved…. as I remember Mico-Tools sells a little kit which

has a nice grease as well as two precision oil bottles with two different viscosity

oils. I use this quite a bit and it’s called: Hobbyist Lubricant Kit.

My memory is so very poor… so, I think I got it from Micro-Tools.

Good luck & have fun….. clean well before adding any lubricant!

This was a chance to show you the kit in use this very day. The #16462 Viso

focusing adapter I purchased for use with the 135mm, f2.8, Elmarit lens head

was screwed up. When the lens head was mounted the f-stops were pointed

downward. The screw slots showed me that some ‘’ham fisted mechanic’’ had

been in there. So, complete disassembly and a good soaking in mineral sprits.

You can’t believe the amount of crud contained in just this little helicoid and

assembly!!!! I will be using the lubricants from the kit once I figure out how

to index the lens properly. Good luck with your endeavors! cheers.

Got it! After a lot of assembly, disassembly and finally figuring out how

messed up this was. Ahhhh, I can sleep tonight.

Washington,

When you put the #16462 Viso focus mount back together were there any adjustment screws, for example to align with infinity symbol?

Thanks, K-H.

K-H,

I thought it would be something relatively easy too. Like loosen a set screw

and rotate a flange 180 degrees. Nope. If I did a number of these I could explain it

better…. but there are internal tubes (not seen in the disassembly photo) that didn’t

become apparent until after cleaning and the parts freed up. The whole assembly can go

in only one of two ways… correctly (f-stops up) or incorrectly (f-stops down). I had

no way to reference this so I had to do a few test assemblies to get it right.

But, as I said, this thing REALLY needed cleaning. Man, oh man though… was this

old stuff ever so nicely made!

Yes, moly greases are great! But, this worked so smoothly just being clean…

a light smear of the synthetic grease was all that was needed.
