Paulus Posted May 4, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 4, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Perhaps a stupid question, but does somebody knows the real difference between all those Titan cameras. When I bought a M6 Titan, I felt a little bit silly, when I read , that it was just a kind of paint or titan dust they put on it. A few years later, I felt more stupid, when the paint came of with camera and a 35mm asph summicron. Then a M7 Titan appeared. Is it the same with this Camera? Is there real Titan on it and where? What about the MP Titan 2006? Where is the titan there? Just paint or solid titan? I know of my titan bracelet, that I can polish it and it looks like knew. Also with my Oris Meistertaucher Watch, but what about the M7 Titan. Can you polish it too and get rid of the scratches? Can one polish a M9 Titan and still see the titan shining ? So does anyone know what the standard for " Titan Camera " is and which cameras live up to that standard?
Advertisement Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Hi Paulus, Take a look here I don't know whatWhat is real Titan? Leica M6 Titan, MP Titan, M7 Titan, M9 Titan.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bill Posted May 4, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 4, 2011 There is no standard for titanium cameras. It's just a paint finish. Regards, Bill
Paulus Posted May 4, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted May 4, 2011 There is no standard for titanium cameras. It's just a paint finish. Regards, Bill Thank you Bill! But why is a MP 2006 Titan 90 grams lighter than a normal one?
Paulus Posted May 4, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted May 4, 2011 What about this? : " The LEICA MP Titan edition has not been supplied with a matching lens, so, even the body cap was a single molded Titanium cap." source: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/Leica/Leica-M3/Leica-MP/MP-Titan/index.htm
bill Posted May 4, 2011 Share #5 Posted May 4, 2011 My apologies - I referred to it as a paint finish; it would be more accurate to call it a plating. I am not a chemist, so I can't say how it is bonded, but they definitely didn't carve the cameras from solid billets of titanium. I can't speak to the weight difference, except to comment that the M6 top-plate IIRC is zinc whereas the M7 is brass. Regards, Bill

Regards, Bill But if an MP normal is 90 grams heavier than a MP Titan, that does not make sense, because, wouldn't they both be of brass? ( or a zinc alloy , i hope it not zinc alone because that's to soft I think )
earleygallery Posted May 4, 2011 Share #7 Posted May 4, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The M9 Tit is solid Titanium.
Nick_S Posted May 4, 2011 Share #8 Posted May 4, 2011 The M7 was available in a limited run of solid titanium. Details are given here along with the those for the plated M6: Leica FAQ — Titanium mania Nick
earleygallery Posted May 4, 2011 Share #9 Posted May 4, 2011 I would like to replace the top and bottom plates of my M2 with solid silver - be nice to have solid silver screws and cogs fitted at the same time.
adan Posted May 4, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 4, 2011 There was a one-off M7 and lens set that were, in fact, carved out of solid titanium for a well-heeled Persian-Gulf customer in 2003. As found in Nick_S's link above #8 - scroll down to "Sheik Saud Ben Mohammed Ben Ali Al-Thani."
Posto 6 Posted May 5, 2011 Share #11 Posted May 5, 2011 There were also M7 sets celebrating 50 years of M- with 1 and 3 lenses, all made of solid titanium. Very nice, if somewhat expensive. The M6 titanium, while plated, was far better than the normal M6, as it had a brass top plate in lieu of the rather nasty zinc of the standard model. Similar comments apply as well to the M6TTL titanium. In summary, the only available true titanium models made come as M9, MP and M7. Quite a reasonable range!
