SD Cards for M8

Jeffrey, unless you really enjoy being an early adopter and having bloody hands from the razor edge of technology, why not buy 2GB cards and wait for the dust to settle.

These things aren't very expensive. In the M8, with the setting to DNG plus Hi-res JPG, I get 100+ images per 2GB card. That's a lot of images.

Having one, big card is also putting all your eggs in one basket.

I just got 2 4GB Ridata cards and the first one I opened will not format. The red light just blinks on and on until I take the battery out. Someone mentioned formatting on the computer, mac in my case. How is this done? Some other cards work, some don't. New Kingston does the same thing. Older Lexar Platinums work, but are only 1GB. I was hoping for the 4GB cards since I just got a Luigi case and it takes a bit of effort to get to the card slot. Great case tough!!

Hi Jeffrey

I use Ridata x150 4GB SD since last X'mas. Work great and smooth, my M8 recognise it and format it in a bliss. Though I've also mentioned in this thread, 2GB cards esp the Extreme III are good choice. If you want 4GB card, I would recommend Transcend right now. Remember, NO SDHC right now. My Ridata card came in seized paper and plastic package.

Cheers

Matthew

I wold recommend the Ultra II cards over the Extreme III. I am an Extreme III fan, but my Ultra II card has had less trouble with the M8 and card reader. I am also waiting for the dust to settle.

Hi,

I can confirm that. Lot's of problems with III and no problems with Ultra II.

Best regards

Well there seems to be one card that no one I have seen has had any issues with and I have been following this for some time and i used them with my DMR also. It seems the Transcends work for everyone. I have the 2gb and 4gb cards that both work on the M8 with no issues. And at this price for a 4gb card it is so low it amazes me. i have paid inthe past for a 1gb card almost 300 dollars but that was several years ago the prices are on the floor so anybody whines about the cost is nuts. Try these

I would recommend against the MyMemory x133 4GB card. I have one and it constantly hangs when you try to open play on the M8. It was very cheap at only about 20GBP. I have been told they are re-branded Toshibas but cannot swear to that. It is supposed to be faster than the SanDisk Ultra II but in practice it is substantially slower writing DNG + JPEG fine. I have bought a SanDisk Extreme III 2GB but it is currently lost in the post. The 1GB extreme III out of my little Canon IXUS 850 back up camera works fine on the M8.

My Sandisk Extreme III finally turned up today and works much better than the Mymemory card. No hangs on play or review and much faster write on DNG + JPEG fine. It seems a bit faster than the Ultra II but I will have to put a stop watch on to check.

So far l've had no problem at all with the Hama 4gig cards.

I just got a hama «Highspeed» 4 GB Card. Compared with my Sansisk 2 GB Ultra II it has less than half the speed. 20 Pictures DNG with the hama takes 59 seconds, with the Sandisk only about 25.

Does anyone know, how slow the hama is?

  • 4 weeks later...

just got my new 2.0GB Sandisc Extreme 3 SDHC, put it in my

D-Lux 3.

Guess what?

The screen said format the card. Hah.

I can't format the card since I can't get past the message on the screen. It just doesn't work.

The Leica instruction manual (page 18) says that you can use a 2GB and more if you get a SDHC card.

.

I can't return the card since I sent for the rebate before I tryed

the card. (Yeah dumb.) I had the card delivered in work.

I didn't have the camera with me.

I just thought you M8 guys would like to know that you are

not alone with this kind of problem.

Does anyone have any advice?

Regards, Walt

Walt on the assumption that you are sure this is not a fake, you can benefit from the life time warranty on these cards from the manufacturer. However, first try flicking the lock switch on the card backwards and forwards a few times and make you leave it away from the lock end when you finish - nothing to lose.

I did the lock switch a few times. That didn't help. Thanks.

I spoke with Sandisc. They said to call Leica and ask about an upgrade

to the software. I doubt that they will have that, but I e-mailed them.

Sandisc said to "test" the card on other cameras or

devices. I don't have anything that I can check it on.

Sandisc said to call them If Leica doesn't have an upgrade.

I'll let you know what happends next.

Fun and games,

Thanks Wilson.

Best, Walt
