ho_co Posted May 11, 2011 Share #22 Posted May 11, 2011 I try to make starve mine for 5 days, but it didn't fix the problem. I sent it to Solms todayit appears after a very smaall shock on the ground, from a suitcase 10 cm tall Gee, that's bad luck. Such a small drop shouldn't normally cause a problem. Was the camera against the side of the suitcase that hit the ground? Must have hit at a bad angle. At any rate, welcome to the forum! Let us know whether Leica diagnoses impact damage. It could be that something internal went out that wasn't triggered by the drop.

jaapv Posted May 16, 2011 Share #24 Posted May 16, 2011 Shuttter knocked senseless, RF out of adjustment, sensor shifted, LCD cover damaged...That cannot be just 10 cm... Maybe it received a shock before and this was the final straw. Claim it on your insurance, as Leica will bill this as damage by fall.
Dominum Posted May 16, 2011 Share #25 Posted May 16, 2011 wow 700 euros..
ho_co Posted May 16, 2011 Share #26 Posted May 16, 2011 "Wow!" from me as well. That was a heavy knock, not just 10cm. The body must have taken some abuse in the suitcase during shipping.
eurovet Posted May 17, 2011 Share #27 Posted May 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) no, unfortunately, this M8 fell from a suitcase 10 cm high. the shock was really minor. but it hurt near the screen, on the wheel. maybe this was the reason. Actually 910€
ho_co Posted May 17, 2011 Share #28 Posted May 17, 2011 Thanks for responding. "Wow" again! The bump must really have caught the camera at the wrong place.
eurovet Posted May 17, 2011 Share #29 Posted May 17, 2011 There was a very little deformation of the backwheel (about 2mm deep). And I am really newbie in Leica repair service. I am not sure that the rangefinder and sensor were out of order, ... maybe it is only a check. I must precise that I choose the extra quick service for 200 € (cost for the quick repair and 40 € for the shipping), the standalone repair is 670 € (about 500 US$). It is a lot of money, but I don't find it far from purpose, theese guys know there job, and have some qualifications. I have been advised a few hours ago that my M8 left Germany end of afternoon (here it is 8 PM). look: Datum Status 13.05.2011 Service order registered on 16.05.2011 Quotation sent on 16.05.2011 In repair 17.05.2011 Repair completed 18.05.2011 Shipment in process. Thank you for asking
ho_co Posted May 17, 2011 Share #30 Posted May 17, 2011 Since the sensor is attached to the back half of the clamshell, when they replace the back, they need to switch the sensor to the new back. And that means they need to align it once it's installed. So it may be fine, but still require service. Keep us posted!
euroveto Posted May 18, 2011 Share #31 Posted May 18, 2011 My M8 was back home at 14h25 this day. About 948 €. Works fine, and very clean. The rangefinder is very clean, without any dust, the sensor too (I never wipped it before). I am just a little bit disappointed because I hoped I could find a new firmware inside. Not really chip, but efficient. Kind of Leica way of life
ho_co Posted May 18, 2011 Share #32 Posted May 18, 2011 Glad it's back! The new firmware isn't available yet to the general public, and AFAIK, Leica techs have to download their own copies just like you and me!
rgv Posted May 24, 2011 Share #33 Posted May 24, 2011 Hello Roylance, Do you have the news for your M8? Détente (Roland GRANVILLE)
roylance Posted May 25, 2011 Author Share #34 Posted May 25, 2011 It is still at Leica NJ, it arrive there on the 4th of May and they said it would be 5-6 weeks. Now the question is 5-6 weeks from arrival or from authorization. So I am thinking mid June, I did receive and email response to what the status of the repair was... "So far so good, and it seems that it will be ready on time.". I am waiting for a clarification of "... will be ready on time." Problem is a circuit board. Hello Roylance, Do you have the news for your M8? Détente (Roland GRANVILLE)
ho_co Posted May 25, 2011 Share #35 Posted May 25, 2011 Roy, estimated time generally would start from their receipt of your approval of the estimate. But that's in-shop time. In my experience, you need to add one week to clear through Leica's shipping department and get back into your hands.
roylance Posted June 7, 2011 Author Share #36 Posted June 7, 2011 Just received and email saying my M8 have been shipped and should arrive on the 9th. It will be good to have in back.
roylance Posted June 10, 2011 Author Share #37 Posted June 10, 2011 M8 is back, came in late yesterday. The problem was a bad circuit board, I decided to upgrade the shutter while it was there. To my surprise the shutter upgrade included a new circuit board. I am surprised how much quieter the new shutter is. The loss of 8000 is not a concern as I never shot at 8000. jamesm1291 Posted June 19, 2011 Share #39 Posted June 19, 2011 Sounds like what happened to me with my M 8. LCD refused to come on. Battery indicator and exposure no. refused to come on. Camera dead in the water. This camera was purchased in 2007 and the same thing happened within 3 month of purchase. Sent to Leica fort warranty repair and returned in working order, but without info on what was wrong. Over 3 years I didn't use the camera much, putting perhaps < 1000 shutter releases. Started using it again 2 months ago ( out of warranty) and the same thing happened again. I just sent it to Leica New Jersey for repair estimate. $750.00 to replace the circuit board. I'm so disappointed with Leica quality control. Makes me wonder whether the brand can be trusted. Leica told me it would take 4-6 weeks to repair since there were so many work orders in their shop. Sounds like other owners are also having trouble with their Leica's. Sorry to sound so negative. But it is no fun to have paid $5,000 for the new camera and then have such totally unacceptable experience with quality.
roylance Posted June 19, 2011 Author Share #40 Posted June 19, 2011 To replace the circuit board Leica NJ estimate was $675. The shutter upgrade was $1300 + $12.50 shipping and a new circuit board. I had it back in a little over 4 weeks.
