dave.gt Posted November 23, 2011 Share #61  Posted November 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) My x1 is back from Solms (after 5 weeks including shipment) and seems to be ok ! From a preliminary view no more dust on sensor, by now robert  Hi, Robert...  Has anyone at Leica explained what is going on with the dust problem? What happens after the warranty runs out?  Surely it is not THAT difficult for a competent individual to take it apart and clean the sensor (after warranty that is...). Anyone on this forum tried this or sent it to a camera repair shop locally?
Advertisement Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Hi dave.gt, Take a look here X1 sensor dust ???. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
robert blu Posted November 24, 2011 Share #62 Â Posted November 24, 2011 Good question Dave. I did not ask, thanks for reminding me about this. I'll ask and keep informed.. In reality this is what is worrying me. I like this camera very much and use it almost daily, but now I'm a little afraid each time! One problem could be the cost when warranty expires and the other is that where I live (italy) the importer does not do this kind of work and sends the camera to Solms. This means each time at least 5-6 weeks during which the camera is not available and I do not like if this happens each 6- 8 months (as it did in my case). From Italy to Solm by DHL, TNT or similar only takes half a day and in my opinion in Solms they had to increase the after sales service. robert
phancj Posted November 28, 2011 Share #63 Â Posted November 28, 2011 I just got my X1 back from the service center. Not that anything was broken but I reckon it is almost the expiry of the warranty so to be sure I sent it in. The service center here in Singapore is a total class act. I mean I buy luxury goods watches etc NEVER had I encountered service staff of this calibre. I mean they are all out to serve, makes the higher price tag more than worth it. The technician (believe his name was Andrew) was a middle aged man with extremely good manners and product knowledge. He told me the dials of mine was worn and now I just got it back the thing is pristine like when I first bought it. Â For the record I never had a speck on my sensor (checked with narrow aperture against white background after reading this thread and others) after two years of shooting including many trips with loads of dust). Even if it occurs in future I wouldnt be worried the least bit, given the professionalism of the leica service. Â If leica comes out with the mirrorless (I rather have AF anytime now due to eyesight) I will seriously look at it. After my experience I have faith in them as a company. Â BTW told them I needed the camera soon as I am going overseas next week. They gave it back to me fully serviced within a week. Â CJ

fen hawk Posted November 28, 2011 Share #65 Â Posted November 28, 2011 My son just came back from a missions trip to Kenya, to which he carried my unprotected X1 around his neck a lot of the time. He took some 1200 shots in sweltering and dusty conditions in small villages near the west coast. I have yet to see sensor dust, so far, having taken many shots since his return. phancj Posted November 29, 2011 Share #66  Posted November 29, 2011 Yup, I think the X1 does not attract dust easily somehow, not that it is not possible.  However, when I asked the service technician he showed me this barrel and said he would recommend it if I was concerned about dust entry, but the service center does not sell this, I gotta order it myself.  CJ Welcome, dear visitor! hmisbell Posted December 1, 2011 Share #67 Â Posted December 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm not sure that using a barrel mount with (perhaps) an infra-red filter will keep dust out of the machinery, but I certainly thought it was worth trying. I had the barrel mount made by S.K. Grimes of Woonsocket, RI. They already had made a mount for a customer in the neighborhood so it was not necessary for me to send my x1 to be measured. Since then I have never taken the barrel off the camera and I have taken the filter off only to clean it. You can reach them at <http://www.skgrimes.com/> Â All good luck. I really think this is a sweet little camera.
hmisbell Posted December 1, 2011 Share #68 Â Posted December 1, 2011 Good grief. I'm using the barrel mount with an ULTRA VIOLET filter. Big difference there.
bluebear Posted December 1, 2011 Share #69 Â Posted December 1, 2011 Good grief. I'm using the barrel mount with an ULTRA VIOLET filter. Â Me too, although it rather defeats the point of a "compact" camera. With the optional hood attached, it looks an even smarter peice of kit! I plan to take my X1 (plus DSLR, of course) on a forthcoming trip to Peru & the Galapagos. With the barrel mount & UV filter attached, I will have no dust worries - just "getting mugged" worries!! Bu11dog Posted January 11, 2012 Share #70 Â Posted January 11, 2012 Just sent my X1 to Leica in NJ for sensor dust cleaning about 3 days ago. Â Already miss it. Well better take out M9 from the bag and start using it. Â I will keep you all updated on how the cleaning goes.
Bu11dog Posted January 23, 2012 Share #71 Â Posted January 23, 2012 Got response from Leica that they are replacing the whole sensor instead of cleaning. The camera will be shipped back Feb. 8th. All works will be covered by warranty. Â I am happy with Leica's service and look forward to get my X1 back with brand new sensor.

Nicolux Posted February 13, 2012 Share #73 Â Posted February 13, 2012 I've sent my X1 to Solms this saturday, dust in sensor too although I've bought it brand new 3 months ago... I've planned a trip to NYC in 2 months, hope the repair will be done before !
Spo Posted February 21, 2012 Share #74 Â Posted February 21, 2012 An interesting thread. After some time I am on the verge of an X1 purchase and wasn't sure about new or second hand. The dust in sensor thing has now concerned me, as the dust on my M8 currently drives me mad, and it wasn't something I had considered would be an issue with the X1. Anyway, in short if I buy second hand I need to factor in the cost of a sensor clean, can anyone advise the likely cost and time frames in the UK? bluebear Posted February 22, 2012 Share #76 Â Posted February 22, 2012 My X1 (bought secondhand) is approaching 2 years old. There is no trace of sensor dust at all. I consider it a non-issue. Despite having an all singing Nikon DSLR, the X1 remains my default camera for the best IQ plus portability.
nickma Posted February 26, 2012 Share #77 Â Posted February 26, 2012 Anyway, in short if I buy second hand I need to factor in the cost of a sensor clean, can anyone advise the likely cost and time frames in the UK? Â You shouldn't need to factor in the cost of a sensor clean. Mine bought second hand was absolutely fine too. When not in use I keep it zipped up. Â One pointer - almost-new second hand seem to go for the same price as 2 yr old models. Be fussy and find a mid 2011 onwards model, or in all black you know it's more recent. Spo Posted March 1, 2012 Share #78 Â Posted March 1, 2012 Well I got my new/second hand X1 two days ago. Black version which had been kept in a cupboard by its elderly owner and I think only shot a few hundred images (I was sceptical about this too but it appears true!). It's in pristine condition and came with a leather case which it's obviously been sitting in for a time. It also came with a nice dust mark at the top left of the sensor! Only one and quite easily edited out but amazing!! I think I'll persist meantime as it's not too intrusive but need to keep an eye out for more. Quite frustrating. I am otherwise delighted with it
sfowler Posted June 4, 2012 Share #79  Posted June 4, 2012 Hello all,  I will be getting the Leica X2 - never owned an X1 so this will be my first Leica camera I have owned. I have owned Canon SLR's and such - just want to go small now and more simpler but want the best IQ I can get for around $2500. I am concerned about this dust issue. If it was an SLR - this would be a no brainer as I have cleaned my sensors numerous times and have always had a clean sensor. I have always thought that having a fixed lens you prevent this from happening. I seen this thread and this was almost a major killer for me and I was already considering going with a different camera or even a different maker. BUT I am trying to stick with this camera when it comes out as this camera creates beautiful colors and has a unique character of its own. I JUST DON'T WANT DUST. I understand this is a warranty coverage - the problem I see with that is - your out of a camera for approximately 3 weeks if not more. Is there a fix for this issue of dust? Besides not using the camera. I have seen a tube that can be purchased and if a UV filter is applied to the tube then the lens is within a tubed enclosure and protected from the outside world of windy situations.  Amazon.com: RainbowImaging 49mm Filter Tube Adapter + 49MM Vented Curved Metal Hood for Leica X1: Camera & Photo  (^^^ ABOVE) So my question is does anyone know if this is the solution for preventing dust on the sensor? If this is not the solution - does anyone have a solution? I know and have read here that most people have never had dust on the sensor with there X1. But there are many that have. I would hate to buy into this camera and be plagued with sensor dust on a camera that has a fixed lens.  I would greatly appreciate responses and solutions as the X2 is not yet in the USA yet and I am in the market for purchasing a camera with the best quality I can get for approx $2500. I have also started to consider a used M8 but a used one in good condition with a lens will be more that this X2. I just don't have that kind of money to invest in a camera that's just a hobby. But its a hobby I am passionate about.  Thanks for your suggestions.  Sam

What makes you think a fixed lens camera is not going to have dust on the sensor? There are many ways for dust to enter a camera...just inspect them yourself. Thankfully, the X1 I have is over two years old with zero problems and most are.  If you are successful in cleaning your own, let us know. IMO, the extension of the warranty should the unfortunate dust problem arise is quite nice. We have users that have had new sensors put in with warranties, so it is not the end of the world even if you do get a dust problem.
