My first is an m2r that was a virtual gift from my undergrad photo teacher when I went off to grad school in NY in 1980. He had bought it new and sold it to me (w/ a 35mm summicron and no-name Japanese 135) for $275! It took me a few years to realize what an extraordinarily generous thing that was and how much faith he must have had in my abilities to choose to part with it. I believe it was the only 35mm rangefinder that he owned, he switched to shooting 2 1/4 around that time. I also have an m2 that a friend sold me years ago with a 35mm canon lens and a 50mm summicron with the google eyes. The M2 vulcanite has been peeling off since I got it but now I could take it all off with my fingernail. I've been looking at the cameraleather.com site and it looks really good. I'm thinking of ordering the Levant Black leather and recovering the body myself. I'd appreciate any input on whether this sounds like a good idea. Anyone have any opinions? Thanks a lot. And, any opinions on fixing a sticky shutter in the m2r? I'm in NYC so I'm torn between walking into nippon camera repair and sending it to Sherry Krauter. lars_bergquist Posted April 27, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 27, 2011 You lucky devil. The M2 is the sexiest of all M cameras, and the M2r is of course the most practical M2. I would own a M2 if I were still shooting film. I hope they will both be decently refurbished, the peeling one in something that looks like the original vulcanite. From my side of the Atlantic I can't give you any practical advice, but go ahead and do a nice job on both cameras!
