Olsen Posted September 9, 2012 Share #1463 Posted September 9, 2012 The mouth of the Bospuros Strait?
M9reno Posted September 9, 2012 Share #1464 Posted September 9, 2012 Yes, Olsen! But which mouth? Is Asia on the right or the left? There are seas at either end of the strait (and neither is the Mediterranean). And which site, first Greek, eventually Byzantine, is the shot taken from? Olsen Posted September 10, 2012 Share #1465 Posted September 10, 2012 Since the southern part of the strait is urbanised on both sides I will guess that this is the northern mouth looking into the Black Sea from the Asian side of the Strait.
M9reno Posted September 10, 2012 Share #1466 Posted September 10, 2012 Perfect answer. The exact site is tricky, its history not very well known. It was called Hieron, and Herodotus has the Persian king Darius sitting there (perhaps the place from where this shot was taken) towards the end of the sixth century BC to survey the Black Sea: "And seated at Hieron he looked out over the Pontus—a sight indeed worth seeing. It is the most marvelous of all seas..." (Hdt.4.85 ff.) The ancient Greeks also worshipped Zeus Ourios (of the Fair Winds) here. Down below is the nice Turkish village of Anadolu Khavagi, the last stop north on the Istanbul ferries, with a couple of restaurants serving great fish. Over to you! Olsen Posted September 10, 2012 Share #1468 Posted September 10, 2012 This should be easy: What is the name of the town on the other side there? Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted September 11, 2012 Share #1472 Posted September 11, 2012 The angled street makes me think of Broadway in Manhattan.
ldossche Posted September 11, 2012 Share #1473 Posted September 11, 2012 Perfect thinking, Stuart, but not yet a full answer to my questions. Lieven
Olsen Posted September 11, 2012 Share #1474 Posted September 11, 2012 Is it from the Empire State Building looking over 'Lower Manhattan'? - Time Square?
ldossche Posted September 12, 2012 Share #1475 Posted September 12, 2012 What to do now? Stuart recognised Broadway, but did not mention the location where I made the photo. Olsen correctly mentioned the photo being made from the Empire State Building, but incorrectly stated seeing Times Square which is more to the north (i.e. right side on the picture) I think Stuart should be declared the winner since he was the first to answer and his answer did not contain any faults.
