Jonathan Bogais Posted April 24, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, After 30 years using Leica film cameras ranging from the M2 to the M6 (which I still use), I turned to digital trying a compact D-Lux-4, which is a great little camera; and just bought the new V-Lux-2 less than a month ago. So far this new camera is a great disappointment. I just can't get any good images. The D-Lux-4 appears better. Has anyone else had any experience with this new V-Lux-2 camera and what's your feedback? Can someone at Leica comment on it? Jonathan

Macmd Posted April 24, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 24, 2011 Jonathan, Just like you, I was extremely disappointed with the pictures that came out of the camera. I emailed leica customer service just to let them know. I sold it after 2 weeks and bought an m9 as a replacement. Very happy ever since. shard Posted April 24, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 24, 2011 Hi all, After 30 years using Leica film cameras ranging from the M2 to the M6 (which I still use), I turned to digital trying a compact D-Lux-4, which is a great little camera; and just bought the new V-Lux-2 less than a month ago. So far this new camera is a great disappointment. I just can't get any good images. The D-Lux-4 appears better. Has anyone else had any experience with this new V-Lux-2 camera and what's your feedback? Can someone at Leica comment on it? Jonathan The V-Lux 2 belongs to the compact super zoom category, meaning it normally has a tiny sensor (megapixels mean nothing) and a huge zoom in a very small size. Anything small in the world of photography will mean compromises. In this case, a small sensor and a big zoom but in a small package. That is 2 strikes. Add in the fact that this is pretty much a Panasonic designed and built camera with mild Leica tweaking to the firmware. That is 3 strikes. Don't get me wrong, the V-Lux 2 is not a bad camera compared to other cameras in the same category, but it comes no where close to the likes of the Leica D-Lux 5, Olympus ZX-1 etc in terms of image quality. At the end of the day, if you want a small compact with a mega zoom, the V-Lux 2 is one of the better options out there, on the other hand if image quality is the main concern, you can do alot better but at the cost of losing the zoom. richam Posted April 24, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 24, 2011 I got the V-Lux-2 because (1) super zoom range (2) HDMI movies; I have grandchildren after all -- like to capture them in sound and motion plus some quick photos when they're in motion between the near and far side of the football field. The V-Lux-2 does this nicely. When I'm really serious about image quality in a small package, my X1 fills the bill nicely. Together, they make a good, light, traveling package. bill Posted April 24, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 24, 2011 Alas, you are so right. The V-Lux line and their Panasonic siblings are total rubbish. Don't waste your time on them. It's not as if they are capable of producing a decent image at all. It's entirely down to this useless camera, it has nothing to do with the photographer. No. Not at all... Welcome, dear visitor! Ando Posted April 24, 2011 Share #6 Posted April 24, 2011 .....rubbish.... Thats a hard verdict! I think, when you use the camera in the right way for the right motives, you will get good results. beemerchef Posted April 25, 2011 Share #8 Posted April 25, 2011 Hi... my first post here. We live (my dog and I) on the road full time (moto/sidecar/tent) and so I will do my best to follow up. No internet very often. I use a couple full frame cameras (no brand mention needed) and I just replaced my Canon G11 with the LUX-V because the lens cover on the G11 had no clearance and kept scratching it... I shot in RAW, use Adobe Lightroom... 20 second process and done. I am so disapointed with the background noise!!! Is there a secret with the processing I am not aware of?... I like the flip screen! I also do a lot of food shots and reason for liking the flip screen... Don't know what else to say! Be well... Beautiful... This is my background noise. The image has been magnified. It really blows me away... any solution? Thanks... Be well... ezc203 Posted April 27, 2011 Share #11 Posted April 27, 2011 ... what's your feedback? Can someone at Leica comment on it? Jonathan Why does it matter what other people think of it? You didn't like it, find another camera that suits you. As for "someone at Leica" commenting on this? So you want an inherently biased opinion? ... Jonathan, Just like you, I was extremely disappointed with the pictures that came out of the camera. I emailed leica customer service just to let them know. It sounds like you guys didn't really understand what the V LUX 2 is before purchasing it. Your comment reads like this in my mind: "Got a Fiat 500 and was extremely disappointed with it, so I replaced it with a Ferrari F450" - Personally, the V LUX 2 is like any "bridge" super-zoom camera: not my cup of tea. But I'm sure some people can find good use for it and take pictures that they want. The D Lux 4 (and now the D Lux 5) are stellar cameras, less flexibility with zoom reach, but performs better given it's restraints.

farnz Posted April 27, 2011 Share #14 Posted April 27, 2011 Beautiful pictures, what camera did you use, the V Lux 2 or the V Lux 20. The EXIF on A.W.'s pictures says V-Lux 2. Why would you ask whether they're from a V-Lux 20? The colour? The sharpness? Something else? Pete.

Pete. AW has both cameras and in a thread on the V Lux 20 he shows similar pictures of wildlife, (frogs) its a fair question. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/178357-what-do-you-think-your-v.html
Ando Posted April 28, 2011 Share #16 Posted April 28, 2011 Yes, in this case its the V-Lux 2. In the other posting (toads and a frog) I used my Lux 20. Although I used nearly the same settings, the Lux 20 shows a little more (over?) sharpened results. Andreas W.
Jonathan Bogais Posted April 28, 2011 Author Share #17 Posted April 28, 2011 Hi all, Interesting comments. Obviously a problem with this product. Have disposed of the V-Lux-2 already and bought an X1. Back to traditional (if digital can ever be). The Leica agent in Australia and the distributor where I bought the camera have been great and restored my faith in Leica after a brief disappointment. Good service! Jonathan Bogais Posted April 29, 2011 Author Share #19 Posted April 29, 2011 Did you get the camera exchanged or did you have to sell it first before buying the X1. I am curious to know the process; I also live in Australia, thanks. I wish, but no. I bought the X1 outright and someone got the V-Lux-2. Big price difference anyway. My comments about Leica service refer to the follow-up on my complaint and the suggestions I've made. Maybe I should have be more thorough when I bought the V-Lux-2 and don't expect miracles. Right now I'm back to proper quality Leica product and very happy with the X1. J

Funny that you would say that you didnt mean to offend, but your statement says otherwise. I initially wanted to buy the M9 but the store owner recommended that i just buy the v lux 2 for practical purposes Adding to that, he said " v lux 2 produces great pictures." The thread starter was asking feedbacks from people who have actually used the camera. I was just stating mine.
