stuny Posted April 21, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 21, 2011 John - Quite lovely, but I think the toning might be a bit too heavy.
jlancasterd Posted April 21, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted April 21, 2011 Do you like this better? I actually prefer the sepia version myself - the subject is the Ffestiniog Railway's Victorian (1880s) Heritage set of bogie carriages. We had it out on a train to Tan y Bwlch yesterday to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the opening of the railway.
pauledell Posted April 22, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 22, 2011 John, Quite a lovely shot. I agree that the toning may be a bit too heavy, but perhaps a more subtle toning might work. The second version is the best of the two. Paul
jlancasterd Posted April 22, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted April 22, 2011 This version is with a reduced amount of toning: For interest. this is what I started with:
jlancasterd Posted April 22, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted April 22, 2011 This was the locomotive on our train - double Fairlie 'Merddin Emrys', built 1879. M9, Voigtlander 90mm Apo Lanthar, ISO
pauledell Posted April 23, 2011 Share #7 Posted April 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) John, I believe I still like the untoned version the most although the third version with less toning is also better than the original. The color version is nice but just a snapshot. The locomotive shot looks great. Paul
daveleo Posted April 27, 2011 Share #8 Posted April 27, 2011 you guys go ahead and fight about the monochrome toning, my 2cents is that the only one I don't like is the color version, and I like the second composition as well. also like the "headroom" you left in the doors-open photos, I would have clipped the top and it would have been not as good as yours. pico Posted April 30, 2011 Share #9 Posted April 30, 2011 From my USA view, the color image is most informative because we have no such luxurious use of wood and aesthetic in our train works which are largely of the industrial mode: passengers as baggage.
