tickman Posted April 18, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have this lens as someone mentioned to get it for portraits, but due to the tight crop of the lens. Just curious how far back you have to stand to get a good portrait shot with the lens. Playing around. It seems I have to turn the camera 90 degrees for a higher and thinner shot if close to the subject or stand further back to get more in when held in the normal position. I assume if you stand further back. You just blow the image up to make it look closer. Haven't taken any pictures with it yet. Just checking it out. If you have any portrait images. christer Posted April 18, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 18, 2011 Generally it is a good idea to fill the negative with what is important in the picture. Saves cropping and thus the need to enlarge more than necessary. This probably improves the quality of the print, at least if your prints are larger than an A4 size paper. With portraits, it is generally not desirable to get close enough to fill the negative if you use e.g. a 35 mm lens. If you do so, then the nose will appear unproportionally large on the print. If you use a 90 mm lens this is not a problem. Get close enough to let the face fill the frame if you wish. If you want to include some of the surroundings to add some atmosphere to the picture, step back a bit or use a 50 mm lens. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The newer 1990-2008 Elmarit? I ask because I often read it should be a bit too sharp for portraits. But your image does not look too sharp. I guess one could call it so as it is no longer manufactured. I think it is sharp enough, but then I use film and do wet printing. It is only occasionally that I scan, and then only for the internet. I only have a flat bed scanner and I use it to scan from the negatives. My prints (30x40cm) are too large for the scanner I have. I would not judge sharpness from the picture in this thread. A lens too sharp for portraits. I have never come across such a lens. If the negative is too sharp for your taste and you do your own printing, just use the enlarger lens wide open when printing, or use it out of focus, or print through a nylon stocking, or use vaseline.
