norm_snyder Posted April 9, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, I was placing a Giotto's cover on the LCD cover on my M8. After attaching, the entire assembly fell out as a result of its own weight. Has anyone reattached to cover [not the sapphire upgraded one] themselves? What did you use? Tape? Blue locktite? Or do I send it to DAG? Thanks, in advance for any suggestions.
Advertisement Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Hi norm_snyder, Take a look here Anybody reattach their LCD cover?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gilgabo Posted April 10, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 10, 2011 I did basically the same thing except that I had dust under my Giottos and tried to remove it because it bugged the crap out of me. I ended up pulling the Giottos AND the plastic LCD cover accidentally with it, revealing a rectangular recess and an exposed LCD screen!! I simply separated the Giottos, cleaned the edge along the perimeter of the recess on which the plastic LCD cover sits, and lightly, carefully applied 'rubberized' Loctite super glue using a toothpick along the perimeter edge and re-installed the plastic LCD cover. Glue was dry and more than strong enough to hold the plastic LCD cover. Sounds straightforward, but truth is it followed about 30 seconds of panic, 10 minutes of swearing, and 2 minutes brainstorming.

LOL! i know that cycle well, although with mine there's usually a brief stop at "How can I hide my stupidity from everyone else??" too. Pete.
SJP Posted April 10, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 10, 2011 I can recall a similar cycle of events when I tried cleaning my M8 sensor with a HAMA cleaning kit. The whole sensor was covered with some horrible oily residue. The next day (slightly longer incubation time) I decided using distilled water and a cotton swab. That worked like a charm, but never again - the HAMA kit was tossed into the nearest suitable container obviously.
norm_snyder Posted April 10, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted April 10, 2011 Which loctite did you use? For now, thin strips of black gaffer tape will hold it together and seal it...It seems like such a trivial thing to ship it off to NJ, but Don Goldberg did suggest it was a job for Leica.... Norm, it's Loctite Super Glue "Ultra Gel". The bottle has blue ribbed trigger sides for controlling the output of the glue. Remember, just put a blob on a clean sheet of paper and use a pin or toothpick to apply very very light amount along the perimeter of the supporting edge. Don't be tempted to put "drops" because it will squeeze out onto the actual LCD when you press down.
joelbartlett Posted April 11, 2011 Share #7 Posted April 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Trying to remove my Giotto's cover, I too popped off the LCD cover. After the initial panic, I separated the LCD cover from the Giotto's protector and reattached it using Scotch 3M 2-sided tape. As the tape is way too wide, I placed the tape on the very edge of the cover and then used a sharp knife to cut off the overhang. So far so good after a number of months. However, long term, I expect there's an M8 upgrade in the works.
