Epson stylus pro 3880

Why leave it on if Epson says to turn it off, especially if there are no clogging issues as a result of doing so? Yes, some leave them on without issues, but I would start with the recommended method until proven problematic. I can't imagine one would damage the heads by turning it off. If there is a problem, that's what warranties are for.

I initially had a problem with clogs on my 3800, and always turned it off. So, I got it serviced by the local Epson rep while under warranty and not only got back a machine that has rarely clogged since (still turning off), but got a full set of inks for free (worth about $450) for my troubles.

I wonder if it is the inks getting better, particularly pigment ones, which were notorious cloggers when they first came out around 2001. I was amazed that my HP B9180 in France, started up with no issues in April of this year, after 6 months switched off. I fitted all new inks towards the end of last year, as some of my carts must have been 4+ years old, from when I had 5 guarantee printer replacements, each of which came with a new set of inks. Usually I have one or more print head errors coming up and have to take the head out, clean it carefully with IPA and then spend about 15 minutes, tapping it gently on blotting paper to get the ink flowing. I was fully prepared to throw the HP away, as I just did not want to spend more money on it, after replacing two heads and all the carts last year but it's working fine at the moment. I was quite looking forward to getting an Epson 3800 or 3880 but not this year.

Inks have improved, and so have the heads. The 3880 has a few tweaks beyond the 3800 to prevent clogging (noted on their web specs).

But, as I posted earlier, the 3800 is still pretty darn good in this regard. With it, I think it's still prudent to run a nozzle check now and then (takes only a minute and one piece of bond paper) to ensure the heads are 100% clear and not 99%. The 3880, as I understand it, automates this process, so even easier.
