50mm Hexanon and M8

After purchasing the M8 I tried it with my three M mount lenses: 35mm Summicron ASPH, 50mm Konica Hexanon, and 90mm Elmarit. Up until now I hadn't given the 50mm Hexanon much of a try. I found that it did not lock into place like the other two and I was afraid to force it. I never encountered this problem with my film M's. Well, tonight I mustered up the courage to turn it a bit further and eureka, it locked into place just fine. I took the picture below of the light above my bed with the lens wide open at f/2. Tomorrow, I will go out and do some shooting with it. Short of a Summilux ASPH, I really like the lens and prefer it over the older version 50mm Summicron. If I replace it, it will probably be for a Summilux, but until then, does anyone have any idea where I can order an IRUV filter for this lens which is 40.5mm wide?

Thanks,

Wilfredo+

B&H has this filter for sale, would it be the correct filter to correct the magenta problem? I'm waiting for the two free filters from Leica for my Summicron and Elmarit.

Thanks,

Wilfredo+

actually i use Konica Hexanon AR bayonet mount lenses on my 4/3

for those that are interested you can access these lenses very cheaply

the 40mm/1.8 and the 135mm/3.2 are claimed by some to be among the sharpest lenses ever

certainly the 40mm is tiny in comparison to other 4/3 glass

edit to add: lovely tones Wilfredo

There are some on some listed on Ebay by a German shop:

eBay: B+W Digital UV/IR Cut Sperrfilter 486 40,5mm 40,5 mm (item 7600910629 end time Feb-09-07 06:57:25 PST)

I haven't bought from this shop in particular, but my filters came from a German Ebay listing and arrived in less than a week from ordering.

Even weirder: as soon as Hoya bought (supposedly merged, but Hoya is much bigger), they announced that they would sell again...

The rumour that Hoya would make the filters came from Jaap, but he hasn't yet fessed up where he heard it :) In either case, regardless of where the filters come from, they will be made to Leica spec and not likely be an off-the-shelf item.

I've purchased several 486 filters from these people via eBay. The only problem I had was they seem to want you to pay cash by registered post or by bank transfer. Once they receive your funds they ship very fast indeed. On their ebay page it says PayPal is accepted but when I tried this the PayPal system said they hadn't supplied sufficient information to complete the transaction. Immediately after buying the items I received an email in german asking me to use their automated payment system which generates a reference number you must include with your payment.

I think the system is geared to European Community buyers where the receiver of funds pays no bank charges. I suspect if you contact them to use PayPal they may ask you to pay the fees.

Their advantage is they seem to have a large number of 486 filters available in many sizes.

Bob,

I contacted them regarding shipping charges and added these to the payment. They said nothing about special payment arrangements when they responded, and I used PayPal. I got the usual PayPal payment receipt after I paid, so I am assuming all went through. If they accepted my payment, I can't imagine that they would then ask me to add extra for using PayPal???

That's interesting to know. Here's a machine translation of parts of the email I received from Oege-Energy immediately after purchase. My first reaction was it's a scam, which was then dispelled after careful investigation. I paid by bank transfer.

Quote: ".......... In order to complete the purchase as fast as possible and problem-free, we ask to go you on following Web Site. Here you receive our bank data and can their again with eBay indicated address see and possibly correct. Beyond that you receive an individual reference number, which you indicate please for the transfer. Only like that it is ensured that the payment it is duly assigned and the dispatch can take place immediately...............................Please you go you only on the following web page as soon as all confirmations of your auctions from us receiving. There you find also our bank account. H I E R K L I C K E N!! "

Since you've paid you should receive the filters quickly. I think mine took 2 days to arrive in the UK after they received payment, which was excellent service!

I managed to take some 50mm Hexanon shots today which can be viewed here: http://www.leica-camera-user.com/people/15224-man-cross.html

Bob,

Thanks for sharing that. I'll keep you all posted. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Cheers,

Wilfredo

As I've posted before, I have several of the "Leica" filters from Leica and they are 486s made by B+W/Schneider. They aren't theoretical filters <G>, I have them in front of me.

Wilfredo,

One way to go would be to buy a 40.5 to 39 stepdown ring and use the 39 mm filters. I doubt there would be any vignetting.

Cheers,

Sean
