Leica on the Rocks

Given that Leica offer a wrist strap for the X1, then one lug should be capable of taking the X1's weight and any reasonable force exerted whilst using the strap.
sure, but nobody knows how much force ppl apply to the lug.I mean if you have the camera on your wrist and using a jackhammer it will most likely gonna brake or the screws will get loose. We will see what Leica says about it, in this Forum he is the only one with this problem, so maybe he is demanding a bit too much from such a camera, who knows. In the end its not made for hard outdoor use.

PLEASE Danielsan, is it so hard to believing that something can be wrong with a Leica?

I do NOT open bottles with it, I do NOT use brutal force, This camera has NOT been in the wars and so on...

This is what Leica says: "Faul: The right fixing point for the neck strap has worked itself loose. As a consequence of this, the camera fell and hit rocks and from there into the sea. The thread of the screws holding the eyelet are undamaget, so no force has been applied. WARRANTY."

But you already know that, dont you? You just have to belive it.

Also Anikol in this forum had the same. Google translate Anikol russian x1 forum pages, very interesting in many ways.

so why are you angered then if you get a new one? be happy. Its definately not a big problem or design fault cause many many more ppl would have this problem. I guess its bad luck. if the thread is allright and only the screws worked themselfes loose, couldnt you felt it?, i mean it takes a bit of time to get completely loose, it must be a bit wobbly before it felt off?

Wonderful. Leica is generous in corporate terms. As constructed here, it was clearly a manufacturing defect. However, Leica is generously taking the user's word that the chicken came before the egg- namely that the lug broke to cause impact rather than as a result of it.

When people wonder why they pay 2k for a compact camera, you can add honorable and generous warranty repairs and replacements into that equation (and I've had two generous repairs- one a replacement).

Definitely be happy that you get a new X1! :D:D:D

What is so hard to understand about this? The reason for the crappy condition is BECAUSE the camera was dropped onto rocks (?) BECAUSE the lug fell off.

There's another example now so the possibility is a manufacturing/design defect, which the OP needs to make Leica aware of by sending his camera back to them under warranty!

Chill out James! You yourself said it was unclear and asked for clarification on whether lug failure was caused by the fall or caused it. Everything about the poster's thread is ambiguous starting with the title- I thought it was a claim about financial solvency!

So what was/is the problem? There was a manufacturing defect, Leica acknowledged and extended guaranty. Anything I'm missing here?

The consequential damages issue is interesting. Fortunately it was just the camera. If the lug had broken and the camera had fallen and hit someone on the head, it would be much more serious.

in the US there would be no liability for either Leica or the owner (I speak as a licensed albeit retired attorney)

This has happened to me about a year ago. I almost dropped my camera in the middle of the ocean. Fortunately i saved it before falling in the sea. Unfortunately I did not get a new X1 but Leica did fix it for me. Now I'm having other issues with my X1. This camera is poorly built for the price you pay. Very lacking of QC.

PS. This is not to say I still like this POS camera.

I am not sure it is fair to attribute X1 faults to poor QC after allowing your camera to fall. There are limits to what any precision instrument can withstand as far as accidental damage is concerned. My X1, one of the first continues to give me first-class service. Well done Leica, I say.

This camera is in bad shape. Lots of impact marks. The flash is only partially raised too- is it stuck like that? I don't think Leica would cover anything with this camera.

Tumbling onto the rocks, bouncing around like a ball bearing in a pinball machine and being dumped into the sea will do that.

Since the strap lug was defective which resulted in the drop, Leica should restore the camera to factory new condition or replace it altogether IMHO.

It does sound as Leica made this situation right, which is great to hear.
