jlancasterd Posted January 31, 2007 Share #23 Posted January 31, 2007 Not sure I would call the VC line "copies", John, any more than the Zeiss Ikon, Rollei or Konica M-mount bodies. They are product lines in their own right, that just happen to be rangefinder cameras using the M-mount. Bill I suppose that's one way of looking at it. However, 'Leica Copies' by 'HPR' and '300 Leica Copies' by Patrice-Herve Pont & Jean-Loup Princelle cast the net much wider. They include anything with a 39mm Leica screw thread or a Leica bayonet mount. Thus my old 1960 Periflex Gold Star is classed as a copy despite its periscope focusing system, as is the Ilford Witness with its weird combined 39mm screw and bayonet lens mount. The clincher in each case seems to be that they can both accept Leica lenses and focus them to infinity. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

It would make a great personal weapon (Soviet light-weight materials being so much more, um, solid than the decandent capitalist equivalents) and it even takes a decent photo. All my "Leica copies" are good, for what they are and in their own way. I have a Zorki 4, a Zorki 6, a Canon P and a Konica Hexar RF. The last is the only one with a really decent rangefinder (in its own way nearly as good as my M3 for brightness and clarity, though more cluttered and lower magnification - but I love that camera). The Canon's RF is OKish, but the Russian RF optics look pretty sad in comparison to any Leica M. Still, for 50 bucks they're usable, and I use them for things I wouldn't use my better cameras for. (The Zorki 6 is my glove box camera, for example.) And I think that at their cheap eBay prices Russian and other "copy" cameras offer people a good way to test the waters and discover more about RF photography for a small (sometimes very small) price of entry. Its only once they've (read: I've) fallen in that the true costs start to become apparent... ...Mike Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I used to commit sacriledge ( hope thats spelled right!! , dislexia rules KO!! ) I used to shoot with a Jupiter 8 on my M5 very successfuly, the lack of click stops seemed to make metering easier!! kodaktrix Posted February 6, 2007 Share #39 Posted February 6, 2007 I used a Canon P for ten years with Canon screw mount lenses. The 2/35, 1,4/50, 1.8/85 and the 3.5/100.
